'Turkey Is Going Down a Highly Dangerous Path'
Turkey's retaliation against Syria marks a dangerous new phase in the conflict -- one that threatens to grow into a regional confrontation. That, though, might be what Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has in mind, say German editorialists on Friday. It could lead to greater Turkish influence in the Middle East.

BEIRUT (AP) — Retaliatory Turkish artillery strikes deep into Syria have showed the speed with which the bloody civil war can entangle its neighbors and destabilize an already volatile region.
Beyond the cross-border flare-up, the 18-month battle to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad has already deepened sectarian rifts in Lebanon and Iraq, raised tensions along the long quiet frontier with Israel and emboldened Kurdish separatists in Turkey.

The Turkish response to the Syrian mortar fire which killed five Turkish civilians in a border town could not have been more restrained. The same Erdogan who remained silent after a Turkish F-4 Phantom jet was shot down a few months ago new that this time the Turkish public would demand a response. Therefore, Turkey bombed Syrian army positions along the border between the two countries.

The Syrian regime grew markedly weaker this week, and will get weaker still as Turkey paves the way for action against Assad one strike at a time.
On Wednesday Turkey shelled a military outpost across its border with Syria. The move was retaliation for Syrian mortar fire earlier that day that hit the Turkish border town of Akcakale, killing at least five civilians.
The shelling, which continued on Thursday, marks the first military action by a foreign state in Syria since the uprising against Bashar Assad began last spring. Assad's forces have hit several Turkish targets since the start of the Syrian conflict, in which Ankara has shown increasing support for the anti-regime rebels.

It isn't yet clear who fired shells from Syria into Turkey, killing a mother and four children, or why. But if Turkey is going to launch a major incursion across the border between the two countries, be sure that the proximate reason wouldn't simply be border security or support for the rebel Free Syrian Army -- it would also be about crushing Kurdish militants.

Political Islam and Kurdish nationalism
Last weekend, Prime Minister Erdoğan demanded that Kurds show a reaction against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), just as a million citizens did after similar ethnically-motivated terrorist attacks in Spain. Turkey has not seen similar protests, because the two countries differ significantly in terms of history, culture, political systems, the zeitgeist, and individual perceptions. The Spanish case might be inspiring, but one hat does not fit all.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his party this week that he’s entering his last term as its leader, then reassured them: “This isn’t goodbye.”
The comment at an Ankara congress Sept. 30 was one of the clearest signs yet that Erdogan plans to run for president, an above-party post, in 2014 when Turks will elect their head of state for the first time since the republic’s foundation in 1923. Turkey: September PMI growth remains precarious
Helped by its limited exposure to export demand out of the Eurozone, Turkeys PMI reading for September returned to expansionary territory for the first time since June at 52.2.
While not immune to the crisis in Europe and its effect on demand, in contrast to EU members in CEE the Turkish economy is dependent on Eurozone demand for exports for no more than 10% of GDP. However, sub-indexes within the HSBC Purchasing Managers Index illustrate that domestic demand a key buttress against economic slowdown continues to struggle.

Fall Out In The Mediterranean
Turkey and Israel were once good friends but ties have slowly soured, creating new geopolitical tensions in the region.
Turkey used to be Israel's most important Muslim ally. The two Mediterranean countries were good friends at one time.
Military, strategic, and diplomatic cooperation between Turkey and Israel was accorded high priority by both countries.
For almost 500 years, Istanbul was the capital city of a great empire. From here on the Bosphorus, the Ottomans ruled much of southeast Europe, Western Asia and North Africa.
