Passenger traffic at Turkish Istanbul Ataturk Airport recorded 21% y/y growth
Erste - 07.05.2012
The State Airport Authority (DHMI) released air traffic data regarding all airports in Turkey for April 2012. The total number of passengers grew 11% y/y in April 2012, with passengers in domestic lines up 14% y/y and international lines up 7% y/y. We observe a slowdown in international passenger growth in April 2012 in airports other than Istanbul Ataturk. In particular, a 17% y/y decline in Antalya Airport's international arrivals/departures negatively impacted the consolidated figures. With the addition of the April 2012 figures, total passenger growth in the first four months of 2012 was realized at 12%, in line with our full-year growth assumption of at least 10%. Air traffic movement (ATM) growth of 5% lagged behind passenger growth of 11% (which is an early indicator of better load factors) in April 2012. YTD, the ATM growth of 7% is also lower than the passenger growth of 12%.

YUSUF KANLI - After 40 years…
After 40 years…
Forty years ago yesterday, early in the morning on May 6, 1972. In this land. Three young sons in their early twenties were hanged in a prison garden. They were Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan, who proudly declared at that bizarre mock trial that other than being patriots they had committed no crime.
Why were they hanged? Did they kill anyone? No. Did they embezzle a lira from the coffers of the state? No. Did they distribute alms from state coffers to their fans? No. Did their fathers obtain them “unfit for military service” documents on grounds they had “testicular cancer” but they later fathered three kids? No. They were leftists. They were patriots. They were opponents of the military coup. They were against Turkey’s NATO membership as well as the fashionable “strategic partnership” relations with Washington.

How Does the New Turkey Think?
Soner Cagaptay May 5th 2012
Turkey has changed so drastically in the past decade that it has become largely unrecognizable. For starters, the country has experienced a sort of economic miracle, nearly tripling its economic output in the past decade and subsequently joining the ranks of the elite G-20 club. Politically, too, Turkey has undergone a complete transformation: The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has won three consecutive elections since 2002, with increasing majorities. The AKP, representing a brand of Islam-based social conservativism, has since replaced Turkey’s former secularist elites.

Orinda couple visit underwater city in Turkey
By Nancy D. Brown
It wasn't the melting of polar ice caps that caused the flooding of Kekova, Turkey, as was the basis of Kevin Costner's "Waterwold" movie. It was a volcano eruption that caused the sea level to rise, flooding the city.
That's what Jon and Lisa Steele learned as they kayaked over the underwater city with Guide Güvenç Duman from Ekomarin Sea Kayak Center. To celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary, the Orinda couple had traveled to Turkey with Sacramento friends Todd and Betsy Stone. Turkey was high on everyone's bucket list as it offered dramatic landscape, interesting culture, intriguing food, hospitable people and history.

It is generally thought that Islam, secularism and democracy are incompatible.
Such a biased view is based on hearsay rather than study of political history in the Muslim world. Muslim societies have been engaging in the debate about the relationship between politics and religion since their early history.
The history of Turkey since the end of the Ottoman Empire in 1923 is a good illustration of a Muslim country grappling with such issues as republicanism, the power of the military, secularism and the role of religion in socio-political space. The current Turkish political scenario where an Islamist party leads the government in a secular state presents a good example for other Muslim countries.

It is generally thought that Islam, secularism and democracy are incompatible.
Such a biased view is based on hearsay rather than study of political history in the Muslim world. Muslim societies have been engaging in the debate about the relationship between politics and religion since their early history.

Turkey and the Raters: The Love Story Continues
Turkey and the Raters: The Love Story Continues
By Joe Parkinson
It’s no secret that there’s little love lost between Turkey’s policy makers and ratings firms.
Turkish cabinet ministers and central-bank officials have long bemoaned raters’ stance on Europe’s fastest-growing economy, stressing that Turkey’s credit rating – which all three big firms rank below investment grade – is too low. Ankara has repeatedly fulminated against Fitch, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s, hurling accusations of an anti-Turkish bias in their sovereign-ratings analysis. After Fitch lowered Turkey’s outlook in November, Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan said the company couldn’t be independent since it was 60% owned by French investors.

Coffee should be as dark as hell, as strong as death and as sweet as love.
It’s no wonder this famous coffee-themed proverb is from Turkey. After all, the world’s first coffeehouse was established in the 17th century Istanbul, during the time of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman sultans’ love for coffee was notorious; they had at least six maids serving the beverage, using some of the most expensive burners, pots and cups ― all made of silver and diamonds.

Erdogan appears prepared to employ any form of demagoguery to stigmatize the minority community of the secularist Alevis.
Much of the world appears seduced by the claims to Islamic moderation of Turkey's Justice and Development Party (known as AKP), led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
