“Distressed” jeans are commonly made by blasting the denim with silica (pictured above) after it has been pressurized into miniscule dust particles. But this fashion trend has been lethal for workers in denim sandblasting factories around the world.
In Turkey, İdris Oral has become the 50th factory worker to die from inhaling too much silica dust, according to Bianet Independent Media. The 28-year-old spent the last two months of his life at the hospital in his home district of Bingöl, in southeastern Turkey: a province where there are 320 other known cases of silicosis.

Turkish Islamists Turn Church Into Mosque
Jonathan S. Tobin | @tobincommentary 02.09.2012 - 2:18 PM
A story in today’s International Herald Tribune (read here on the New York Times website) provides an interesting insight into exactly what happens when a secular state is taken over by Islamists. The piece concerned the Hagia Sophia of Iznik, an ancient church that brought 40,000 tourists to the town south of Istanbul much to the delight of the locals. Iznik was once known as Nicaea, and it was there the first Ecumenical Council of the Christian Church met at the Hagia Sophia in the year 325. But the Islamist government of Turkey has put a damper on the prosperity of those who profited from the museum by formally converting the building into a mosque.

The Case for Organizing a Military Force from the Muslim World to Intervene in Syria
By Soner Cagaptay
New Republic, February 9, 2012
The ongoing crisis in Syria is that rare international issue that should unite both humanitarians and foreign policy realists. Intervening to terminate the Assad regime is the only way to end the Middle East's bloodiest humanitarian tragedy in decades. It's also the most effective way to get rid of the most anti-American regime in the Levant, a strategic area for U.S. interests. That's not to say that intervention will be simple. Ill-conceived action could escalate the conflict. That's why the intervention in Syria needs to be velveteen in nature, soft to the touch and woven patiently over time.

Turkish Foreign Minister Dr. Davutoğlu Comes to Washington
Posted: 02/ 8/2012 11:37 am
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu's visit to Washington this week comes at a pivotal time in U.S.-Turkish relations. The importance of Turkey to the U.S. administration can be traced by the number of high-level visits by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in July 2011, Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta and Vice President Joe Biden in December 2011 while this is Davutoğlu's first reciprocal visit since his last trip to Washington in November 2010. While there is a sense of deja vu given the frenetic pace of meetings, speaking and awards including his selection for the second time to Foreign Policy's top 100 Global Thinkers list for "imagining a new role for Turkey in the world - and making it happen," there is much that has changed since the last time Dr. Minister came to Washington.

BERLIN — A recent film and a high-profile arrest in Germany have caused many here to take a closer look at a small, but growing, female contingent of far-right extremists.
Germans were shocked to learn in November that a trio of neo-Nazis calling themselves the Nationalist Socialist Underground appeared linked to a series of unsolved murders of small businessmen of Turkish or Greek descent and a female police office, dating from 2000 to 2007. Even more shocking was that one of the members of the group was a woman, Beate Zschäpe.

Turkey’s Foreign Policy: Zero Problems with Neighbors Revisited
by Richard Falk
February 9, 2012
Pundits in Europe and North America in recent months have delighted in citing with a literary smirk ‘zero problems with neighbors,’ which has been the centerpiece of Ahmet Davutoglu’s foreign policy agenda since he became Foreign Minister on May 1, 2009. Mr. Davutoglu had previously served as Chief Advisor to both the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister ever since the AKP came to power in 2002, and was known in those years as the ‘architect’ behind the scenes. Critics of the zero problems approach point to the heightened Turkish tensions with Syria and Iraq, the persisting inability of Ankara to overcome the hostile fallout from Mavi Marmara incident with Israel, and even the revived salience of the long unresolved dispute with the Armenian diaspora sparked by a new French law that makes the denial of genocide associated with the 1915 massacres a crime and has led to a dramatic worsening of Turkish-French relations.

Previously I had the pleasure of discussing the very same concept with Ali Rıza Ersoy from Siemens, who leads the company’s efforts in making cities a little smarter. Furthermore, last week at the IBITIG meeting led by Faruk Eczacıbaşı and Leyla Arsan there was a long debate about whether Istanbul was a smart city.

Istanbul (CNN) -- The auctioneer rattled off prices and artists' names with breathtaking speed, punctuating every sale with the announcement "Saa ... saa ... saa -- TIM!" meaning sold in English.
The bidding was fast and sometimes competitive at the Nisantasi Auction House, in one of Istanbul's most posh neighborhoods. Within an hour, auctioneer Ali Ulukaya sold off more than $300,000 worth of paintings, almost all of them by living Turkish artists.

Charges have been filed against him and while the result of the case is uncertain, it has drawn the attention of an information website. The lawsuit against the account ''twitter.com/allahcc'' was opened by television presenter Serdar Tuncer, who claims that the more than 4,600 tweets sent by this tweeter mock the Islam and other religions and humiliate their faithful. Tuncer, who presents television programmes dedicated to Ramadan, as the website Bianet reports, has said that ''the correspondence between the person called @allah (cc) and his readers'' violates article 216/3 of Turkish Criminal Law on ''denigration of religious values".

I wrote earlier today about the human rights violations that have become routine under the regime of President Obama’s buddy Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In addition to making hypocrites out of his friends in Washington, this also raises important questions about Turkey’s standing to criticize Israel for measures intended to defend their citizens against terrorist attack. Under Erdoğan, Turkey hasn’t merely abandoned its longstanding strategic alliance with Israel; it has also become Hamas’s new chief sponsor.
