Is Israel ‘trembling’ and ‘on its knees,’ or is Ankara dreaming?

EHUD TOLEDANO
Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu briefed the Turkish Parliament Foreign Relations Committee on several issues, but the Turkish press reported mostly about his statement regarding Israel. Mr. Davutoğlu said Turkish policy was to “bring Israel to its knees,” which he maintained has indeed been achieved. This type of empty and self-damaging talk reminded me of another, similarly unhelpful incident that had taken place in New York during the September U.N. General Assembly.

Iran sanctions bode ill for Turkey’s economy

As the West tightens the noose on Iran with toughening sanctions, Turkey may find itself trapped in the middle - and strong economic ties with a neighbor could be the first to suffer.

On the last day of 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama signed into law new sanctions to be imposed on financial institutions dealing with Iran’s central bank. The measures aim at hurting Iran’s ability to export oil. On Jan. 4, EU governments have “in principle” agreed to ban oil imports from Iran. How these decisions will be implemented remains to be seen - many countries including Turkey are reportedly seeking exemptions

Without a doubt, one of the major changes in Turkey in recent years has been the willingness of the state and of a growing segment of Turkish society to confront some of the dark chapters in the country's modern history. The way this is being done might be flawed (look at this previous post about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's politically-charged apology for a 1930's mass killing in eastern Turkey), but the significance of what were once taboo subjects now being openly discussed should not be overlooked.

Denying the historical veracity or authenticity of a genocide is wicked, untruthful, and immoral. It is a post-mortem affront to those many people who perished, to their descendants, and to the collective memory of humanity. It is truly one of the basest intellectual acts an individual can commit. However, the act of genocide denial, written or verbal, must never be made an illegal, criminal act.

Darwin Clashes With the Quran in Turkey
Julia Harte | January 2nd, 2012

Charles Darwin, the father of modern evolutionary theory, tried to reconcile his faith with his scientific observations about the origin of humans. But few religious fundamentalists in Turkey are willing to try the same: On November 22, the Turkish government instituted a new “Secure Internet” filtering system in the country. While a largely unfiltered version of the Internet is still available to the population, the new system offers two filters that did not previously exist: a “Child Profile” and a “Family Profile”. A few weeks ago, Turkish independent media network Bianet reported that all websites pertaining to Darwinian evolution are banned under the “Child Profile”.

Students of international relations spend much time and energy studying leaders of countries, in order to be able to understand, explain, and if possible anticipate their foreign policies. Some of these leaders, though, confound our best efforts by alternating between what seem to be careful reasoned policy and then veering wildly in the opposite direction by letting their unfiltered emotions get the best of them.

Dear Norman,

I didn’t want to have to deal with this media fiasco, but a big deal is being made of it: A French parliamentarian proposed a bill making it illegal to deny the Armenian Genocide. The AKP responded in populist fashion by attacking French history, which is dark indeed. So we are back to invented controversy, and here are my thoughts, briefly:

Rebels Against The Pasdaran

Rebels Against The Pasdaran
By Jonathan Spyer January 2, 2012

In July, 2011, as the world focused on the bright hopes raised by the Arab Spring, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps launched a large-scale assault across the Iran-Iraq border. Their intention was to wipe out an armed challenge to the Islamist regime in Teheran. The target was PJAK (Party for a Free Life In Kurdistan), an Iranian Kurdish organization engaged in both political and military struggle against the regime. PJAK, closely aligned with the PKK, maintains bases in the southern Qandil mountain area, from where its fighters launched raids across the border into Iran. The intention of the Revolutionary Guards forces was to destroy this infrastructure. The operation would continue, an Iranian official told state television, ‘until all PJAK members were killed.’

If one comes to Istanbul from any Western country with a sizable Turkish population and sticks to only the restaurants into which they are reeled by the first man who doesn't shake a menu at them and block their path down whatever clogged alleyway they happen to be roaming hungrily, one will quickly come to the conclusion that Turkish food is best served outside of Turkey. But that is really not the case, really.
