Spat Between Israel and Turkey Puts White House on the Spot
Washington Seeks To Defuse Tension Between Key Allies
By Nathan Guttman
Published September 11, 2011, issue of September 16, 2011.
Washington — For the Obama administration, no day highlighted the quandary it faces in the downward spiral between Israel and Turkey more than September 2.
In one day, Ankara took a step viewed as crucial to confronting Iran by Washington, and no doubt welcomed by Israel, as well; and a separate step seen as hostile in the extreme by Jerusalem, and hardly less so by Washington.

Dutch Muslim MP calls on Muslims around the world to issue a final fatwa against terrorism
Marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Tofik Dibi, a Dutch Muslim member of parliament has called on Muslims around the world to issue a final fatwa against terrorism to help end a decade of hijacking Islam.Muslims make up one million of the Netherlands’s 16 million population, mostly from Turkish and Moroccan origin.
The Muslim lawmaker said his campaign, titled "The Last Fatwa”, offers an opportunity for the world to hear the voice of the "reasonable Muslims". Dibi said: "the voice of free-thinking Muslims needs to be heard," Dibi said.
“They are the ones standing up for freedom and democracy in the Middle East, and North Africa during the Arab Spring, and we hope this campaign will help to show that the majority of Muslims dream of freedom and democracy just like everyone else.”
A Britain-based Muslim scholar, Sheikh Tahir ul-Qadri, also issued a 600-page fatwa in May 2011, condemning suicide bombings, kidnappings and the killing of innocent people as “absolutely against the teachings of Islam”.
Dibi who is a rising star in the Dutch Greens political party confirmed that the new campaign appeals to the reasonable sounds of Muslims to reflect the true nature of Islam. “I’m appealing to common sense and refer to individual freedom," he said. “We all experience Islam in our own way.”

U.S. considering Ankara’s request to base Predators in Turkey to fight a Kurdish group in northern Iraq
The Obama administration is considering a request from Turkey to base a fleet of Predator drones on Turkish soil for counterterrorism operations in northern Iraq, a decision that could strengthen a diplomatic alliance but drag the United States deeper into a regional conflict.
The U.S. military has flown the unarmed Predators from Iraqi bases since 2007 and shared the planes’ surveillance video with Turkey as part of a secretive joint crackdown against fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. Unless a new home for the Predators is found, however, the counterterrorism partnership could cease by Dec. 31, when all U.S. forces are scheduled to withdraw from Iraq.

Although the U.S. government and the EU officially labels the PKK a terrorist organization, the group has not targeted American or European interests.

The Arab Spring and recent dramatic deterioration of Turkish-Israeli ties present Israel with a uniquely threatening security environment. Since 1949, Israel has always had the comfort of having Turkey, one of the two major Levantine powers, as its friend. This is no longer the case. In fact, conflict seems to be looming between Turkey and Israel.

Israel and Turkey: Can it get worse?
Can it get worse?
The row between Israel and Turkey is becoming increasingly bitter
RELATIONS between Israel and Turkey, already rocky, have worsened. On September 2nd the Turkish government formally expelled the Israeli ambassador who, as it happened, was back in Israel. Military links have been suspended. Turkey’s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is to go to Egypt—the first visit at such a level for 15 years—to sign new military and economic agreements. Mr Erdogan may even visit the Gaza Strip, which Israel continues to blockade since it is still governed by Hamas, the Islamist movement that officially rejects Israel’s existence. That would be a real poke in Israel’s eye.

Rina Barbut, 29: From Istanbul to Tel Aviv, 2008.
Although she was always seriously involved in Jewish activities in her native Istanbul and identified as a proud Jew, Rina Barbut found that making aliya added an important new dimension to her life. She became more observant religiously, she volunteers her time to help others who are settling here, and she loves living in a Jewish country. It has not been easy, especially finding the right job, but after two and a half years here, she feels completely at home.

US caught out by speed of escalation in Israel-Turkey crisis
As the diplomatic spat between Turkey and Israel deepens, the United States appears to have been caught out by the speed and nature of the escalating crisis as it threatens to spread across the Middle East.
Stemming from a deadly Israeli commando raid in international waters on a Turkish flotilla delivering aid to the Palestinian territory of Gaza in May last year, the crisis has escalated in recent days over Israel's decision not to apologize for the raid that claimed the lives of nine Turkish activists. It has also said it will keep its controversial naval blockade on the Gaza Strip in place.

Turkey: Betting on Bicycles to Break Istanbul’s Gridlock
September 7, 2011 - 3:11pm, by Alexander Christie-Miller
Only around 10,000 people cycle regularly in the city, according to the Bicycles Union, a Turkish lobbying group. (Photo: David Trilling)
Bicycles Union, a Turkish lobbying group, estimates about 10,000 cyclists brave the congested city streets of Istanbul. The city currently has about 50 kilometers of cycling lanes, including a long stretch along the Asian shore of the Bosporus that is mainly used for recreation. (Photo: David Trilling)
“Are you crazy?” is a question cyclists in Istanbul often hear. The city’s steep hills, poor roads, and dangerous drivers make it a hair-raising place for anyone on two wheels. But with Istanbul’s roads wracked with gridlock, the city’s cyclists are mounting a campaign to claim a bigger share of the road.

Turkey: Ankara's Tough Talk Against Israel Also Aimed at Cyprus?
September 7, 2011 - 3:19am, by Yigal Schleifer
With its relations in Israel in freefall, following the release of a United Nations report about last year's Gaza flotilla, Turkey has increasingly been turning up the heat on its former ally. In particular, Ankara has promised that it will be increasing its naval patrols in the Eastern Mediterranean to show Israel its displeasure with the ongoing naval blockade of Gaza. But could these beefed up patrols (if they materialize) actually be aimed at flexing some muscle towards Cyprus? From Reuters:

Editor,
Why has our government and many others tiptoed around the Armenian genocide issue with Turkey for almost 100 years? After all, there’s no doubt that the Turks’ denial of responsibility for genocide in the murder of 1.5 million Christian Armenians in 1915. Turkey is a total fraud. Now that Turkey’s secular mask has been pulled off by its Islamist government, there’s certainly no diplomatic reason to avoid calling a spade a spade any more.

Turkey's Sacred Hatay Province
Turkey’s Sacred Ruins
Sep 5, 2011 1:00 AM EDT
A haven for war-torn refugees, the province of Hatay has an Ancient sanctity and an oddly occidental style.
For souls in torment, your helpful guidebook might say, there’s no better destination than the holy sites of Turkey’s Hatay province. I rediscovered the area’s sacred legacy on a recent visit to the frontier between Turkey and Syria, some 35 years after I had lived briefly in Hatay as a boy mesmerized by the dreamy sensation of ancient time. My physician father roamed the hospitals of the province, a tendril of Turkish territory that juts into Syria along the Mediterranean. During his work trips, he often took me to see mysterious ruins.
