Turkey's decision to freeze all military agreements with Israel following the publication of the Palmer Report could hurt its battle against Kurdish insurgents, security experts estimated in a report published in the Turkish daily Hurriyet. Turkey’s anger
Turkey’s anger
ISRAEL’S refusal to apologise to Turkey for the raid on the Gaza peace flotilla is astonishing, because the UN report made public on Friday contains elements that Tel Aviv should have had the common sense to feel satisfied with. No wonder Turkey should have decided to expel Israel’s top diplomats for refusing to apologise to Ankara and suspend all military contacts. While the report, authored by a former New Zealand prime minister and an ex-president of Colombia, does hold Israel guilty of using “excessive force” it says its commandos faced “significant, organised and violent resistance” from some passengers, “requiring” the commandos to use force “for their protection”. What more could Israel expect from a UN report? The passengers were unarmed. But still the Israeli soldiers chose to shoot them “multiple times, including in the back or at close range”. This act of aggression resulting in the loss of innocent lives on the Mavi Marmara had not, according to the report, been “adequately accounted for” by Israel.

The Arab World’s ‘Dallas’
Sep 5, 2011 1:00 AM EDT
Turkish Soap operas are sweeping the Middle East and luring viewers with scandalous storylines.
A handsome ottoman prince is hunting in a forest when a cavalcade of horsemen rides up bearing a fateful message. Meanwhile, a slave ship full of nubile Russian women destined for the harems of Istanbul creaks its way across the Black Sea. So begins Magnificent Century, Turkey’s answer to Showtime’s The Tudors. A bodice-ripping historical soap opera based on the life of the 16th-century Suleiman the Magnificent, it’s just one of more than 100 shows produced last year by Turkey’s booming TV-drama industry. The programs are becoming a wildly popular cultural phenomenon across the Middle East, bringing in their wake a renaissance in Turkey’s soft power and ushering in a low-key social revolution among the housewives of the Arab world.

Editor: It certainly seems as if anything, true or not can be published as opinion in your editorial section. Possibly Thomas Sowell is a victim of extortion and blackmail by his Armenian drinking buddies. To state "The need to bring people down in humiliation that marked the mass violence against Armenians in Turkey nearly a century ago ..." is so grossly inaccurate and insulting that this statement needs correction.

The Netherlands: Dutch Game Show Criticizes Government's Harsh Immigration Policy
On Thursday evening, the Dutch television channel VPRO aired Weg Van Nederland, or Out Of The Netherlands, a game show in which five rejected asylum seekers compete to take home Euro 4,000 once they are deported.
Cheap entertainment? Shockingly inappropriate? Merely cruel? That is far from what VPRO intended. Instead, Out Of The Netherlands is a harsh critique of the Dutch PM Rutte's conservative government aggressive and often inhumane immigration policy masterminded by its coalition party leader Geert Wilders. As the show's website reads: "An asylum seeker's life is like a game show. Before you can even realize it, you're out."
The five asylum seekers on the first show were all young and well-educated. Among them also one who was an aeronautical engineer from Cameroon, while another, a student of Slavic languages will be returned to Chechnya. Gulistan, an 18-year-old Kurd whose family fled Armenia 11 years ago, won the Dutch trivia quiz by correctly answering questions like, "Who was the first king of the Netherlands?" and artistically carving a map of the Netherlands out of a slab of cheese.
VPRO programming and editor-in-chief Frank Wiering who initially was not enthusiastic when production house Skyhigh pitched the quiz said: "My first reaction was: terrible idea, we're not doing that. Then I looked into the issue more deeply and decided: we have to do this! Weg van Nederland focuses attention on the fact that, these days, many asylum seekers who are being expelled have children who have lived in the Netherlands for eight years or more. They have had a good education, speak perfect Dutch and have only seen their country of birth on television. We believe it's time to stop and think about this."

In 1995, the city of Gaziantep, on the southeastern edge of Turkey’s Anatolian plain, was under siege. Its crumbling medieval center was swamped with refugees from a civil war between insurgent Kurds and the Turkish Army that eventually left 40,000 dead and 3,000,000 people homeless. Along the borderlands with Syria and Iraq, smoke rose from rural Kurdish villages obliterated by F-15 strikes.

Report Finds Naval Blockade by Israel Legal but Faults Raid
By NEIL MacFARQUHAR and ETHAN BRONNER
Published: September 1, 2011
UNITED NATIONS — A long-awaited United Nations review of Israel’s 2010 raid on a Turkish-based flotilla in which nine passengers were killed has found that Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza is both legal and appropriate. But it said that the way Israeli forces boarded the vessels trying to break that blockade 15 months ago was excessive and unreasonable.
The report, expected to be released Friday, also found that when Israeli commandos boarded the main ship, they faced “organized and violent resistance from a group of passengers” and were therefore required to use force for their own protection.
But the report called the force “excessive and unreasonable,” saying that the loss of life was unacceptable and that the Israeli military’s later treatment of passengers was abusive.

The welcome
It's impossible to miss the Ritz-Carlton's modern skyscraper looming above the more historic buildings on the Taksim skyline. This is definitely not your classic Ritz-Carlton, I think as we pull up, but my first impression is dispelled at the entrance, where we are greeted by attentive doormen in uniform and whisked past the baggage detector into a lobby with marble floors, chandeliers and wood-panelled walls. Walk through the lobby and the main selling point is revealed: a wide view of the sparkling Bosphorus Strait from the European side at our feet across to the green hills of the Asian side.

The declaration by Turkey's president that Ankara has "lost all confidence" in the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad signals further isolation for the embattled regime in Damascus. International calls for stepped-up sanctions are growing, despite concerns about whether the regime or the Syrian public will suffer most. Analysts say despite Ankara's escalating rhetoric, Turkey remains in an important position to provide incentives for a political transition in Syria.

The rising cost of a night in Istanbul
Sep 1st 2011, 17:22 by A.B.
THE cost of a hotel room in Istanbul has risen by 37% in the past year, according to the latest worldwide survey ( PDF) by Hogg Robinson Group (HRG). The weakening of the Turkish lira has had some effect on these prices, but if measured in pounds sterling the rise is still a notable 25%. HRG suggests two reasons for the change: Istanbul’s growing appeal as a business centre, and the fact that safety concerns send many travellers in the city to five-star properties. (The survey's figures derive from the sums that HRG's clients pay for a room.)

My wife, Ingrid, and I were sitting in the lobby of the Hotel Residence in Istanbul, listening to an Israeli historian named Daniel wax nostalgic. Daniel’s mother, a native Istanbulu, had taken him there on frequent childhood visits in the years before the varlik vergisi, or “wealth tax,” of the 1940s and the Istanbul pogrom of 1955 — an attack aimed primarily at the city’s Greek population that spilled over onto its Jewish and Armenian ones, as well — persuaded many in its once-thriving Jewish community to leave. (Many had already left by the early decades of the 20th century, spurred by the decline of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of Turkish nationalism.)
