Farm lady sells livestock to watch Turkish soap

By Ali Fahhoul
NAJRAN – Smitten by the hugely popular Turkish soap operas, a Saudi farm lady sold the entire herd of her livestock to avoid distractions while the shows were on.
The old lady said she could not watch the TV series with concentration because in between she had to milk the sheep and attend to them. So she decided to sell the livestock.
The mania for “Noor” and “Sanawat Ad-Daya’a” gripped the Saudi homes so much so that Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Aal Al-Sheikh termed them as “evil” and “un-Islamic.”"

Istanbul

This week's verdict by Turkey's Constitutional Court -- which rejected an attempt to ban the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) for undermining the country's secular foundations -- has been hailed by the U.S. and the EU as a great step forward for democracy and rule of law. Fair enough. Banning a party that last year renewed its mandate in office with 47% of the vote would have been a huge setback for Turkey. But that doesn't mean we should all sigh with relief and conclude that liberal democracy is flourishing under the Islamic-oriented AKP's rule."

Turkey's top court announced today that the ruling AK Party of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is not, in fact, violating the fiercely secular constitution. Instead, Erdogan got off with a warning and the party's state funding was cut in half. Six of 11 justices ruled against the AKP, but luckily for Erdogan, seven votes were required to give him the boot. Close call."

"With its nose bloodied, democratic Turkey needs our support

Yesterday, Turkish democracy received a bloody nose, but not a knock-out blow. Turkey’s constitutional court voted six to five in favour of banning the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) - to which Turkish President Abdullah Gul also belongs - and banning its leading figures from politics. The court vote fell short of the seven-vote majority needed for a ban. Nevertheless, the court voted to cut the AKP’s state funding. Hasim Kilic, the court chairman and chief justice, described the ruling as a ’serious warning’ to the AKP: ‘I hope the party in question will evaluate this outcome very well and get the message it should get,’ he said; ‘The verdict on cutting treasury aid has been given because of members who decided that the party was the hub of anti-secular activities’, although ‘not seriously enough’ to ban the party."

As a foreigner living his fifth year in Turkey, I was grateful for Mustafa Akyol's excellent criticism pointed out in his article, 'Why the CIA funds me and other nonsense.' (July 24)

I came to Turkey from Finland in 2004 to teach at the Boğaziçi University (BU) and I lectured on sociology and comparative education to over 1,500 Turkish students until January when I left to work for a private company as consultant in EU/WB development aid projects in Turkey. I was astonished how the great majority of my students were reflecting exactly the mentality of criticizing the leading political party for destroying Turkey and turning it into a religious state (with the help of evil foreign powers, of course)."

In a telephone interview with Reuters on July 30 2008, European Union commissioner for enlargement Olli Rehn called on the Turkish government to step up with social and economic reforms to meet EU standards and atone for time wasted resulting from political instability over the past two years.

Rehn's appeal came after Turkey's constitutional court decided, on July 30, not to disband the ruling Justice and Development (AK) party, as requested by the country's chief prosecutor in March on accusations of being a focal point of anti-secular activities."

Turkey on a tightrope, but has not fallen

"Turkey on a tightrope, but has not fallen

IT’S NOT just Tayyip Erdogan and Abdullah Gul who are breathing a sigh of relief at the Turkish Constitutional Court’s decision not to ban their AK party, and them personally, from politics. Many in Turkey – and not just the 47 per cent of the population who voted for the AKP – will be grateful that a plunge into uncertainty has been avoided.

Here in Cyprus, the wide coverage given to the story is an indication of the concern its impact could have had on efforts to reunify the island. A ban on the AKP, which has shown considerable pragmatism on Cyprus, and a parallel resurgence of the military-backed nationalist secular elite, would have dashed hopes of Turkey endorsing the slightest compromise on Cyprus."

Cyprus welcomes AKP reprieve in Turkey

"Cyprus welcomes AKP reprieve in Turkey
By Jean Christou

CYPRUS yesterday welcomed a decision in Turkey not to ban the ruling AKP party, saying it would bode better for new Cyprus negotiations due to get underway next month.

Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou said the outcome of the month-long political crisis in Turkey, which could have seriously impacted on Cyprus, was positive.

Speaking after a meeting with the heads of the diplomatic missions in Nicosia, Kyprianou said any political crisis in Turkey that could result in the strengthening of the military establishment would hinder the process for the solution of the Cyprus problem."

"Turkey concerned about Iraq Kirkuk issue
Friday, August 01, 2008 07:50 GMT
Kirkuk issue takes the upper hand in Iraq’s politics while Turkey has showed interest in the issue after Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki received a phone call from Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who expressed his concern over Kurds demand to join Kirkuk to Kurdistan. Erdogan wished Iraqi leaders would agree on a provincial law that satisfies all parties noting that the submitted proposal stipulating to give 32% for each main component and 4% for Chaldeans and Assyrians in Kirkuk is a good proposal supported by Turkey. A presidential statement explained that President Talabani explained to Erdogan that developments do not implicate that Kirkuk has joined the region but is seen as a warning of joining the city into the region if no agreement is reached on the provincial election law between Kurdistan Alliance and other parties in the central parliament."
