Turkey's EU membership is essential
European Commission is unimpressed with French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s Mediterranean Union State plan; but agreed on an enlargement plan which Turkey could be included. NEWS CENTRAL Turkey started EU accession talks in 2005 but is not expected to join the bloc before 2015, if at all, as some member states are skeptical toward its membership; however they are all aware of Turkey’s geopolitical importance as well as its energy transit role. The importance of Turkey is being emphasized by many EU officials. Foreign Minister of Greece, our friend and neighbor country, Dora Bakoyannis is a good example. Bakoyannis supports Turkey’s bid for European Union Membership. Speaking at a joint press conference, Bakoyannis reaffirmed “Following the process of rapprochement started in 1999, relations between the two countries have improved with each passing day."

During the visit of Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan to Greece, I was in neither Greece nor Turkey. I was in Brussels. With a group of my students from the Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Communications, we were the guests of the independent Greek Cypriot MEP Mr. Yannis Matsis to visit the European parliament and be guided through the intricacies of its functions – thanks to a quota of guests that every MEP has in their budget. So, my Turkish students were able to have a real taste of the corridors of power in the heart of the European Union for the first time. They were able to hear EP functionaries explaining to them how the different and diverse nations that compose the European Union today can send their elected members to the biggest Legislative Body in the world. The European parliament does not consist of groups of political parties but of different groups, the largest of which is the Popular Group followed by the Socialists. "

THE NEW POLITICS OF THE CYPRUS ISSUE
Either UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon himself took the new initiative on the Cyprus issue into his own hands, or somebody dropped it there. The developments that took place this week regarding the Cyprus issue were all quite unexpected. Ban’s report, the Babacan-Bakoyannis agreement and British Minister of State for Europe Jim Murphy’s statements all hint at the new policy of the world’s political giants on the Cyprus issue. If you happen to know the political alphabet and understand political language, then you can easily understand what is cooking in the kitchen of politics."

I have not commented on this since Hrant Dınk was assassinated. I think for one thing, I was rather depressed by the total failure of the the political parties to seize the opportunity for reform. Plan to lift headscarf ban angers Turkish secular elite - Times Online

Turkey is to end a longstanding ban on the wearing of headscarves in universities, signalling a potential threat to the country's secularism.
The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has Islamist roots, proposed the move as it put the finishing touches to a new draft constitution, setting the scene for heated debate between the centre-right Government and Turkey's secular elite. The ban is seen by its supporters as one of the pillars of Turkish secularism and a firewall against creeping Islamism. "

Some years ago I had an experience that a Turkish Kemalist would have liked a lot! I was invited by a British colleague (a solicitor, lawyer) to his home for a dinner. He was a person who was very fond of history and had a keen interest in Turkey. Our conversation was very nice at the beginning but after a while, the atmosphere became quite tense. As we were talking about Turkish history, inevitably, we touched upon the subject of Kemalism and its effect on Turkey. I said, I believe many problems we face in Turkey now have their roots in the founding process of Turkish Republic. I felt my comments about Kemalism made my colleague uncomfortable, and at the end of the night he was quite angry and yelling, You do not understand Atatürk, Orhan!"

Turkish heavyweights clash; Fenerbahce-Galatasary Preview
This weekend one of the most eagerly awaited games of the Turkish fixture list sees heavyweights Fenerbahce and Galatasary meet for the first of their two annual league dust-ups at the Sukru Saracogllu Stadium on Saturday evening. Galatasary are currently top and unbeaten in the Turkish Superlig whilst Fenerbahce are back in third, 4 points off their most keenly hated rivals. Therefore this game has taken on a pivotal role in the Championship; if Galatsary win they will take a potentially decisive step to the Championship and of course deposing Fenerbahce as reigning Champions, whilst if Fenerbahce can get the win then all bets are off as they close to within a point of the current league leaders."

ANKARA – The frenetic travel of President Abdullah Gul highlights Turkey's new self-confidence on the global stage as its economy booms and foreign investment pours into the European Union candidate nation.
Gul's election to the presidency in August has reinforced a growing commercial and diplomatic trend to reach out beyond traditional Western partners to Turkic Central Asia, Russia, Iran, the Arab world and east Asia. "

Hypocrisy, European style
Here at Dellib we like to give you the world view of things. You know, stuff you won’t find on the local papers. So this is a special post from a man I will call “The Turk” he’s the only one I know, besides the ones that own all the diners on the East Coast.
I do not know if you knew that Sarkozy is/was in Algeria very recently.
What’s surprising and appalling is Europe’s, Mr. Sarkozy’s hypocrisy. As you may know, some Europeans, especially Sarkozy, at every opportunity in the past, has “reminded” Turkey to “accept” its past and accept the claims of the “so-called Armenian Genocide”: and went even so far as attempting to make this a precondition on EU accession talks. Why have democratic reforms been initiated on the dawn of elections? - Turkish Daily News Dec 06, 2007
Markus UREK
Prime Minister Erdoğan gave everyone hope for the solution of the Kurdish problem after his speech in Diyarbakir in the spring of 2005. However, now we understand that his speech was made as preparation for possible early elections. Anticipated early elections did not happen, and the government had not taken any concrete step from May 2005 to May 2007 for the resolution of the problem. Therefore, arms spoke, blood spilled, and mothers cried. "

The budget, the Constitution and women rights - Turkish Daily News Dec 06, 2007
Budget talks in Parliament were relatively heated as backstage was calm. Unfortunately at the point we came the talks have transformed into a symbol of a mundane democratic life. Sessions in the past were the stage of cut-throat discussions about the country's problems. Still the platform on Tuesday was alive and kicking. The Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal rather leaned on to a speech about economic policies. He said fight with inflation is unsuccessful, growth rate is regressing; unemployment and poverty issues are deepening. Baykal fiercely criticizing Finance Minister Kemal Unakıtan and Energy Ministry about corruption accused the government of dragging Turkey away from its traditional secular and unitary route in economic, political and governing aspects."

Erroneous map in German booklet angers deputies
In a booklet sent to Turkish lawmakers the German Foreign Ministry has depicted Turkey's Thrace region as Greek territory in a map and showed Cyprus as a single-state member of the European Union, angering deputies who have seen it. It was not clear whether the mistake was made intentionally or not. Republican People's Party (CHP) İzmir deputy Canan Arıtman, who decided to draw attention to these mistakes in Parliament, said in a statement to Today's Zaman: “I hope the mistakes were made inadvertently. Otherwise, it will be seen as an unforgivable error that will disrupt bilateral relations between Turkey and Germany. I will bring the case to Parliament's agenda as soon as possible. I will also ask the Foreign Ministry whether they have any information regarding this case. Their failure to notice such a grave mistake is also unacceptable.”"

Turkey, still a western ally?
'Far from being the source of anti-Americanism in Turkey, the AKP represents an ideal partner for the United States in the region." So asserts Joshua W. Walker, a former Turkey desk officer at the State Department now studying at Princeton University, referring to the Justice and Development Party (known as the AKP). Writing in The Washington Quarterly, Walker supports his thesis by noting the constructive Turkish role in Iraq, praising "how carefully the AKP has guarded the [US] alliance and tried to work with the Bush administration, particularly when compared to other European nations."
