When he was eight years old, Muammer Ketencoglu would swing under the plum tree at his home in Turkey’s Izmir province and listen to the radio. Since he could not see, he would tune in to Greek and Balkan stations and enjoy the sound of music while kids his age played and squabbled outside. Seeing his interest in music, his uncle gifted him an accordion, which became his constant companion. “I dropped out of Bosphorus University in Istanbul where I was studying psychology and channelised all my energies into studying and playing folk music,” says Ketencoglu, who will be presenting his repertoire with two others at the India International Centre (IIC) today evening."

Ottoman women, freer than you think - Turkish Daily News Jun 09, 2007

"Ottoman women, freer than you think
Saturday, June 9, 2007

What would one call a strong, dominant Turkish woman? A sultan! Yes, the word is both masculine and feminine but is only rarely applied to the latter.

Although such a woman is an exception in Turkish society today, she does exist. Actually in western society, one might refer to such a woman as your majesty even if there was no royal connection at all - but this has connotations of mockery. How is it that the Turks came to use the title of sultan in this way? "

“Those who define themselves as Kemalist today in Turkey do not seek to reach the Western standards as Ataturk tried to. They are only trying to spread fear to the public in order to stand against the new dynamics.”

Turkey is going through a very tough period, which is very hard for foreigners to comprehend, even for me. Many citizens in Turkey are having a hard time finding a party that supports democratic rights, the rule of law and social democracy in the way it is perceived in the West.
Out of this mess, real social democrat circles including various NGOs and political parties, have decided to follow a method in order to make their way to the Turkish Parliament by avoiding the 10% threshold of the Turkish Electoral System. ISTANBUL -- The shining achievement of modern Turkey is declared by the darkness around it. In Saudi Arabia or northern Sudan, conversion from Islam is considered apostasy, a crime punishable by death. Even in traditionally tolerant Malaysia, a Christian convert was recently prevented from officially changing her religious status, being informed by a court that 'the plaintiff exists under the tenets of Islam until her death.' In Turkey, a legal change of religion on your identity card merely requires a notarized letter, and several hundred Christian converts have made the switch."

Turkey is a bigger export market for U.S. products than Russia, said a top American trade official here yesterday. According to the Deputy Commerce Secretary David Sampson, the economic reforms underway, openness of the market and the degree of transparency makes Turkey a bigger export market than Russia. There have been dramatic reforms that Turkey not only pursued but implemented in the course of the last 5 6 years, said the American official in an interview with the Turkish Daily News. Conducting an official visit to Turkey, Sampson was in Istanbul Thursday following talks that he held in Ankara on Wednesday.Despite Turkey's economic recovery, American firms have not shown the same level of interest when compared with European and Arab capitals. Sampson agreed that the trade volume between the two countries does not reflect the potential. Success breeds success. And there are some success stories to build on, said Sampson, pointing to the fact that trade has increased by 17 percent to $11 billion.Emphasizing the fact that economic and commercial ties are undevelopeld compared to the diplomatic/military ties, Sampson said that his visit aims at sending a strong signal to strengthen the third leg in the relations."

Turkey's Front in Iraq War

"Tension builds on the northern border of Iraq, as Turkish military forces mass, and Iraq's Kurds work toward a separatist autonomy.

Turkey is Poised for War against Iraq’s Kurds

by Patrick Seale

Far from quelling Kurdish separatism in Iraq, the war might revive it in Turkey itself, home to some 15 million ethnic Kurds. Turkey fought a bitter war against the PKK from 1984 to 1999, which resulted in 35,000 dead and the displacement of some 2 million.

On both sides, memories of this war are very fresh, and there is great reluctance to see it break out again. The argument on the Turkish side is that a decisive campaign against the PKK is the best way to prevent its recurrence.

Tough talk raises fears of more conflict

A SPATE of attack has raised fears that Turkey’s long war with separatist Kurds in the country’s south-east may heat up again. Since the capture of a Kurdish leader, Abdullah Ocalan, who has been locked up in a Turkish jail since 1999, trouble has abated. But on Monday June 4th eight Turkish troops were killed in Tunceli province, in Turkey. And not long before that, 12 people were killed, including some soldiers, by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) it is thought. The organisation is also blamed for a suicide bombing shortly before in Ankara. The Turkish army has shelled Kurdish areas in response."

Data showing U.S. refiners were struggling to boost summer fuel production and Cyclone Gonu's disruption of Omani oil and gas exports lent additional support to the market."

"An Islamic Test for Turkey

By Michael Gerson
Wednesday, June 6, 2007; Page A23

ISTANBUL -- Here in Turkey, the matter of headgear is taken seriously. An edict in 1925 forbade the wearing of the fez, causing millions of Turkish men to don bowlers, which were seen as more Western and secular. In 1982, the government of Turkey banned the wearing of headscarves by women in university classrooms -- a symbolic statement that Turkey would not be taking the route of the Iranian revolution across the border, which mandated the veil. But colorful headscarves are common on the streets here, worn in piety and protest. And the resulting headscarf debate is the Turkish equivalent of the American abortion controversy -- heated, culturally defining, admitting no compromise."
