DORTMUND, Germany (AP) -- Brazil drew 0-0 with Turkey on Tuesday in a lackluster final test before the country starts the defense of its Copa America title in three weeks.
The Brazilians changed most of its lineup from the 1-1 draw against England four days earlier, and it showed in ragged play.
Steady jeers came from the crowd of 26,700 in Borussia Dortmund's 80,000-seat Westfalen Stadium.
The Turks controlled play and earned most of the scoring chances, especially before halftime."

Darcy in Turkey: Turkish troops heading for Iraq?
"Turkish troops heading for Iraq?
On occasion, Turks appear to be a remarkably complacent people. Their top general publicly asks for permission to cross over into Iraq; their Prime Minister publicly warns that Turkey's patience is at the breaking point; their UN representative is to present a dossier probably justifying an incursion; and a military build-up continues on the Iraqi border. Some 80,000 Turkish troops have been amassed opposite the newly-empowered peshmerga, and all that happens in the Turkish press is some short discussion on an extra few tanks being sent to the border. Turkey may be about to send troops into the most volatile area in the world, and a deafening silence reigns in the Turkish press. There is no discussion at all about the objectives, methods and time frame of such an action."

"The ups and downs of democracy in Turkey
Yuksel Soylemez

Question: Turkey could not elect a President. Was this not a minus, or a poor show, for Turkish democracy?
Soylemez: Well, some people may think that it was, but I beg to differ. It was the unprecedented revolt of the parliamentary minority against the heavy handed imposition of the parliamentary majority in power. Seen from that angle, it was an expression of democratic freedom of choice, and as such it was an historic event that can be described not as the impotency of the TBMM but as a example of Turkish democracy on the rise."

Eurofighter, which recently lost out to Lockheed Martin in a multibillion-dollar deal with Turkey, is again pitching its Typhoon fighter jet to Ankara.
“The Typhoon would be a perfect complementary solution if the Turkish Air Force is to maximize its air deterrence,” said Enzo Casolini, vice president for Alenia Aeronautica, the Typhoon consortium partner assigned to market the plane to Turkey. “We expect Turkey to join our new phase. Turkey’s decision to choose the JSF [Joint Strike Fighter] does not exclude the Eurofighter option.”"

Turkey: Political allies of military move to unseat moderate Islamist government
By Sinan Ikinci
4 June 2007
Last week the leadership of the Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) publicly announced that its election strategy to unseat the ruling moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP) would be based on criticisms of government corruption and the practice of parliamentary immunity. According to the declaration, the CHP leadership and its temporary ally, the Democratic Left Party (DSP), will emphasise that the AKP has failed to deal with these two closely interlinked issues, although they promised the opposite to the Turkish electorate before the 2002 national elections."

"Laina Farhat-Holzman: In Turkey, a head scarf is a red flag
Passionate public demonstrations have been held in Turkey recently against Prime Minister Erdogan's selection of Abdullah Gul to run for the republic's presidency. These thousands of demonstrators were Istanbul's secularists, who rear the creeping Islamism of Erdogan's government. Gul's wife wears the Islamic head scarf as a sign of her piety — a silly issue in Western eyes, but to the secularists, the head scarf is a red flag. Their freedoms, guaranteed since 1923, when the secular republic was created, are being challenged by resurgent Islam. The courts backed the demonstrators, as did the Turkish military, which has been a guarantor of a secular Turkey since the republic was created. Mr. Gul will not run."

When Hamburg-based film director Fatih Akın calls on Turkish Environment Minister Osman Pepe in Ankara, he is rebuffed: “You might know about making films, but you don’t know anything about environmental issues,” the minister tells him.
The chapter of the landfill site that is being established near the village of Çamburnu, with its 3,500 inhabitants in the tea-growing region near the Turkish Black Sea coast, was long closed, Pepe insisted. Akın, however, whose most recent film, “The Edge of Heaven,” has been nominated at the Cannes Film Festival, has only just begun to roll up his sleeves. His next project, a docu-thriller on the struggle of the Çamburnu villagers, is being filmed in Turkey under the working title “Rubbish in the Garden of Eden.”"

Saturday, June 2, 2007
Referring to a panel on the wall of the Turkish Parliament quoting Atatürk’s words “Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the people,” Suver asks whether ‘the people’ means only men. “As long as you do not give a chance for equal representation in Parliament, this saying is invalid – erase that saying and put ‘men’ instead of ‘public,’ so we know our place.” "I am convinced that the exercise of social and political rights by women is necessary for mankind’s happiness and pride. You can rest assured that Turkish women, together with the world’s women, will work towards world peace and security". Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, April 22, 1935, International Women’s Congress in Istanbul. “We are not asking for favors, we just want our rights as human beings. Woman should be a fully productive member of society – more than just for cooking, cleaning and raising children. She shouldn’t be a member who just consumes.”"

"EU Energy Policy and Turkey (Original Text)
EU EXTERNAL ENERGY POLICY
The European Union is developing a common European energy policy which essentially aims at tackling climate change, limiting the EU’s dependence on imported hydrocarbons and ensuring the supply of secure and affordable energy for consumers, while contributing to the competitiveness of its economy.
This will require a combination of internal and external policies. Climate change must be addressed globally. External policies will also have to address the EU’s increasing dependence on energy imports from sometimes politically unstable regions and supplier countries."

Work has started to bring the eight-storey Çukurören Underground City, the largest underground city in the Central Anatolia region, into tourism. The underground city located within the borders of Gülpınar has a long history and was the largest underground city in the Cappadocia region, Aksaray's Gülpınar district Mayor Nizamettin Uğur told the Anatolia news agency. Research has revealed that Çukurören was an eight-storey underground city. It is said that ground waters pass through the third and fourth storey of the underground city. But we cannot see it because we haven't come to that point yet. We reached the second storey of the city. There is a church, a winepress, food stores, living spaces and wells on this level," said Uğur. "Work has been carried out to reach lower levels."
