ISTANBUL, Turkey — The cautious courtship between Turkey and the European Union looks like it might be headed for a messy and acrimonious breakup.
They were a mismatched couple from the beginning: one wealthy, mostly Christian and liberal, the other far poorer, overwhelmingly Muslim and largely conservative. Perhaps it's no surprise the initial optimism over Turkey's bid to join the bloc has deteriorated into mutual recriminations and a seemingly hopeless inability to communicate."

Cyprus Decides, Greece Follows - Preview

ATHENS -- Greece faces a serious foreign policy dilemma. On the one hand, Athens supports Turkey's bid to join the European Union. On the other hand, it also supports, officially at least, the policies of the Greek Cypriot leadership. Thus Greece may inadvertently end up helping derail Turkey's EU accession.
Brussels and Ankara seem to be heading for a collision. Foreign ministers from Turkey, Greece, both sides of the divided island and current EU president Finland were supposed to have gathered this past weekend to discuss a transport dispute between Cyprus and Turkey. But the meeting fell through."

Is Turkey’s Government in Danger from the Military?
Alarmist rumours are circulating in Ankara, Washington and some European capitals that Turkey’s Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), may be in danger of being overthrown by a military coup. The potential threat is said to come from the new Chief of Staff, General Yasar Büyükanit, who took up his post on 30 August. He is thought to be less reformist than his predecessor, General Hilmi Ozkok, and less inclined to accept civilian authority over the armed services.
Born in Istanbul in 1940, General Büyükanit graduated from the military academy in 1961 and has climbed steadily up the military ladder ever since. He is considered a fervent champion of secularism and of the country’s territorial integrity -- fundamental principles inherited from the founder of the Turkish Republic, Kemal Atatürk.

Mehmet Ali Talat calls himself "president". But his "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" is not recognized. Just a few days before the European Commission publishes its report on Turkey, diplomatic pressure is mounting to end the division of Cyprus. The Finnish EU-presidency offers a possible end to the embargo of Famagusta port in Northern Cyprus. The port could be administered by EU officials, so Turkish Cypriots could export their goods to EU countries directly from Famagusta, which they cannot today. But Turkish Cypriots want more: they demand embargoed Ercan airport be reopened for international flights. Part of the Finnish package deal includes the empty "ghost town" of Varosha. It should be given back to the Greek Cypriots who fled south during the war. Thousands of refugees could, maybe, return to the North."

Judeoscope.ca-Secular Turks Criticize the U.S. Ambassador for Dismissing Warnings Against Rising Islamism in Turkey
During the first week of October 2006, a fierce secular-religious debate broke out in Turkey when President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and top Turkish military commanders warned of the growing threat of Islamist fundamentalism in Turkey. [1]
That week, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was on an official visit to the U.S. This visit was depicted as successful by U.S. and Turkish government officials, and especially by the Islamic press in Turkey, despite the ruling AKP’s (Justice and Development Party) invitation to Syria-based Hamas officials, [2] Turkey’s drawing closer to Iran and Syria at a time when the U.S. was trying to isolate the two countries, and the rampant anti-Americanism in Turkey. [3]
Secular circles in Turkey have a long standing perception that the U.S. has supported Prime Minister Erdogan and feared that he would exploit this trip to garner U.S. support for his presidential bid in 2007, as well as for the AKP in the run-up to the November 2007 general elections."

Turkish Armenians | 1195) Turks Are Ready To Confront Their History. Are Armenians Ready To Confront The Truth?
There are various reasons why the Armenian view of history has become the accepted wisdom in the world at large. No single issue moves the Armenian diaspora as much as what has come to be known as a genocide, and many Armenians, having attained positions of wealth and influence throughout the western world, have made the perpetuation of this issue their crusade. As a result, virtually all the information that we have concerning the tragic events of 1915 comes from Armenian sources, or of their sympathizers. What works to the pro-Armenians' advantage is that the western world has failed to regard the two peoples on an equal plane. The much greater suffering endured by the Moslems of the period has been almost completely ignored. . .

JURIST - Paper Chase: Turkish rights record to be focus of emergency EU-Turkey membership talks
Joshua Pantesco at 10:30 AM ET
[JURIST] Turkey's bid for European Union membership could be further damaged by an unreleased report on the country's human rights record, a draft version of which was obtained by the Independent. The report condemns Turkey's refusal to compromise on free speech issues or to allow ships from Cyprus to dock in Turkish ports. An emergency negotiation session has been scheduled this weekend to address EU concerns. Earlier this week, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan [official website; BBC profile] said that his government has no plans to abolish Article 301 [Amnesty backgrounder] of the country's penal code, despite EU warnings [JURIST report] that the law infringes upon free speech. FT.com / Comment & analysis / Editorial comment - Turkey on track for a collision with the EU
Published: November 1 2006 02:00 | Last updated: November 1 2006 02:00
Turkey and the European Union give every appearance of sleepwalking into the 'train wreck' that Brussels warned earlier this year could end Ankara's accession negotiations. That might be welcomed by some existing members who now want their club closed to outsiders, but it would be a strategic failure for the EU, as well as a setback to Turkey's ambition to become a fully developed modern nation."

Western Resistance: Turkey: Islam, Secularism And A National Identity Crisis
The current government of Turkey is led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development (AKP) party, which was amalgamated from banned Islamic parties in 2001. When the party came to power after the general election of Sunday October 30, 2002, Erdogan, the party leader, was not allowed to become prime minister. He had publicly read out a pro-Islamic poem in 1998, and as a result had been convicted of inciting religious hatred, and this prevented him from holding public office."

TheWhitePath.com: Islamocapitalism In Office: Turkey's AKP
n a Wall Street Journal piece titled "Turkish Tiger: Freedom thrives even under an "Islamist" government," Matthew Kaminski, the editorial page editor of the newspaper, evaluates the flourishing free market economy under Turkey's Muslim-minded government led by the Justice and Development Party (AKP). That's really an interesting phenomenon. At a time when Turkey's die-hard secularist generals declare "global capitalism" as a major threat to the country, the country's devout Muslim politicians are embracing capitalism. AKP's leader and Turkey Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan repeatedly calls foreigners — including Israeli Jews — to invest in the fast-growing Turkish economy"

Hürriyet - Olli Rehn: Our relations with Ankara are schizophrenic
Olli Rehn, the EU Commissioner for Expansion, has characterized EU relations with Ankara as 'schizophrenic' in an interview with the French newspaper Liberation. While asserting that he was against the freezing of talks with Ankara, Rehn did underscore some of the difficulties in Turkey's quest for EU accession, pointing to issues such as freedom of expression and freedom of religion as being areas where reforms had to continue. Rehn did also stress the need for 'fairness' towards Turkey from the EU, saying 'The union must come through on its promises.' "

Recent events in Turkey indicate that the country has a decided desire to, at the least, be acceptable to western society. No doubt part of the motivation is entry into the EU, a Turkish project for about twenty-five years now."

Main Line Times - Bedding down in sultan style in Istanbul
By: RALPH COLLIER, Main Line Times
10/31/2006
Main Line Times readers and our radio listeners persuade us that, in reality, they are very much concerned about where they sleep, particularly in Europe. They scrutinize hotel literature
more carefully than they do information about the local Schloss, chateau or museum. The
Internet has few filters, and the alert traveler should be aware who is providing the information
for a property and why. In a search for a hotel in Istanbul, is the booking engine's primary aim
to cash in on a commission rather than ensure that you will have a memorable experience? One
answer is to negotiate with a reputable travel agent.
On a visit to Istanbul in September, we decided to change to a different hotel, and it was a
winner. Hyatt Regency Istanbul, with more class than its counterparts on the North American continent, has a typical Hyatt feature, the so-called Regency floor, where the guest is pampered, kept away from the maddening crowd and the ordinary. Whether you're in Istanbul working or on vacation, a sweet and highly professional Turkish staff sees to it that everything is in place."
