Turkey should ditch a decade-old policy of viewing any extension of Greek territorial waters as cause for war, in a bid to further improve ties, Turkish Parliament speaker Bulent Arinc said in comments published yesterday.
In Athens, Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis described Arinc’s reported remarks as “an important move in the direction of further improving bilateral relations.”
The Turkish Parliament debated in June 1995 a proposal giving the government authority to take measures — including military action — against an attempt by Greece to extend its territorial waters to 12 miles in the Aegean."

Most of the time, they could not become soldiers or governors. In short the main problem for the Armenian peoples was lack of a state. When the French Revolution triggered the nationalist movements in the world, the Armenians were not ready for such a radical change:

Big News Network.com Wednesday 6th April, 2005 (UPI)
A Center for Turkish Studies report said Wednesday one-third of the 1.9 million Turks in Germany live below the poverty line, Deutsche Welle reported.
The study said another 35 percent live just narrowly above the poverty level.
The researchers blamed the numbers on Germany's economy and the collapse of that nation's coal and the steel industries.
Researchers say Turks have difficulty finding jobs in other sectors due to poor education and training. The center called on German politicians to promote the importance of education and training among Turkish immigrants."

The New Anatolian / Adana
Armenians have used propaganda, 126,000 books published on the so-called genocide claims, whereas Turkish researchers are, on the other hand, trying to present the reality of the issue to the world through only 130 books, stated investigative author Mustafa Onar yesterday to explain Turkey's lack of success on the controversial Armenian problem..
He highlighted that Turks and Armenians have lived together for centuries and said that rebellious activities started after the 1878 Berlin Treaty. 'The Armenians rebelled against the Ottoman Empire at the incitement of foreign Christians,' said Onar at a conference entitled 'Unforgettable Armenian Problems,' organized by the Modern Life Support Association (CYDD) in Cukurova. Commission raps Ankara over protocol
"Commission raps Ankara over protocol
By Myria Antoniadou in Brussels
THE European Commission has made it abundantly clear to Turkey that it cannot annex a statement that it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus to the protocol extending the Ankara Agreement (customs union) to all 25 member states. It has given assurances to the Cyprus government to this effect, sources told the Cyprus Mail.
As a consequence, it is expected that Turkey will issue a bilateral statement to this effect, which is not legally binding and expresses no one other than Ankara, as it did when it signed the European Constitution in Rome last year.
However, the EUs executive has not managed to convince the Turkish government to implement the Protocol and not wait until its ratification by the countrys parliament.
Without ratification, the agreement cannot be implemented, even if Prime Minister Erdogan signs the Protocol, a move expected in September, only a few weeks before Turkey begins accession negotiations on October 3.
Diplomatic sources did not rule out the possibility of some big member states proposing to overcome this problem by recommending a vague time-frame by which the Protocol would have to be ratified, some time in 2006.
The majority of member states do not want to open a public discussion on Turkeys behaviour and its EU accession course, concerned it may have a negative effect on the Constitution referendum to take place in France, in May. If Europes first Constitution does not go through even in one country then the planning on how the enlarged Union will operate will fall through."

If you are walking in Girne on Mersin Street, and come across a three story apartment building with police waiting in front that has a sign hung out front which says 'Talat Laboratories,' it means you have found the home of Mehmet Ali Talat.
The current Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus and candidate for President of North Cyprus, Talat lives in this house with his much loved wife Oya. Entering the door to the garden, I came face to face with the Prime Minister. His hands were full carrying breakfast plates, and he was laughing. 'Why are you surprised, don't your prime ministers do this?' he asked. I couldn't answer. The breakfast table was set with fresh local produce from Cyprus, including the simits. Fried hellim cheese, herb breads, olives, Oya's own jellies, herb teas. Talat and I will go together to the villages of the region after breakfast-Sirinevler, Akcicek, Alemdag, Goceri, Pinarbasi, and Dagyolu. Later still we will go to the 9,500 square meter lemon garden left to Talat by his father. "

I think Armenia is at the top of the list of the countries that Russian Leader Vladimir Putin loves and places importance in. Putin visited this country three times, in 1999, 2001, and 2002, and he was in Yerevan again last week for the fourth time. This clearly shows us that Putin places a special importance in Armenia. Many issues were discussed during Putin's last visit to Armenia. Included were, activities within the frame of 'Russia Year' in Armenia, cooperation in energy, industry and trade, new investments in metal industry, excluding iron production and investments in banking, construction, transport, military and technical issues and the reduction of Armenia's debt. It is not yet clear on which topics there were any developments or increased cooperation because there has been no open explanation from either countries yet, but I will likely discuss these issues when the time comes. But this year, the government, with an eye toward helping its bid to join the European Union, has officially allowed the celebration by the Assyrians, members of a Christian ethnic group that traces its roots back to ancient Mesopotamia."

JEDDAH - ``Improvement of bilateral relations with the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) can be easier from now on,`` Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktas said on Monday.
Denktas said this was the first official visit to OIC in foreign ministerial level, and stated that improvement of bilateral relations would be easier from now on.
Denktas said he recalled the decisions made during OIC meeting held in Istanbul and requested assistance from the OIC Secretary General to set up bilateral relations.
Serdar Denktas said he visited Gulf Cooperation Council based in Riyadh and Islamic Development Bank after his visit to OIC.
Pointing out that an expert delegation from the Islamic Development Bank would visit TRNC in the coming period and carry out studies for the current projects, Denktas said they wanted to set up a high technology region, and noted that TRNC could get technical and loan support from the bank for this.
Denktas said the OIC member countries this time seemed more willing to back the decisions made in Istanbul. "

Latest attack came Sunday and a group of youths smashed windows of a mosque in the southern Netherlands. One person was hurt in the attack, and police arrested one man after the Saturday night disturbance in the city of Venray, police said. The government's move to postpone the new Turkish Penal Code (TCK) was hailed by journalists' associations in the hope that some of its articles, which were feared to challenge the freedom of press and expression, might be amended. This would help to improve visible restrictions on journalists, but what about the invisible ones?
Journalists in Turkey are still trying to recover from the aftershocks of the 2001 economic crisis, the worst of its kind in the history of the Turkish Republic.
The media was among the worst-hit sectors, and thousands of media workers became unemployed while others had to settle for living on a limited budget, preventing them from doing their best while carrying out their profession."

We are a nation that often confuses results with reasons. However, we are not unique in this flaw, otherwise there would be no social science or social theory. Yet, when a nation collectively chooses to deal with results without pondering on reasons, problems mount up, changes shape and, at times, turn into intractable conflicts. Then super or superior powers are blamed for the creation of these problems that have exceeded our ability to contain them. Three such problems block our path to healthy relations with the rest of the world: The Cyprus, the Armenian and the Kurdish problems. There are enough experts to offer meaningful assessments for the first two. Allow me to address the latter. "

The Yukos crisis has rekindled debate about President Vladimir Putin's ideology. In 2000, befuddled analysts, dusting off Churchillian cliches, dismissed him as a mystery inside an enigma. After Sept. 11, 2001, they pronounced him a Thatcherite and, more recently, 'Moscow's Caligula.' These descriptions are inaccurate. Putin's ideology has been clear and consistent. He is a Kemalist. "

Indian policemen are lending a hand to the UN force in a troubled sector in Cyprus which runs through the old city of the worlds last divided capital, Nicosia.
Six Indian policemen are helping the UN keep the peace in Cyprus, divided in 1974 when Turkey occupied the northern third of the island and cleared the area of its Greek Cypriot citizens.
The commander of the Indian contingent attached to the UN force is Inspector Satwinder Singh Lally of Bhopal. He is also in charge of civilian police operations in Sector 2 of the UN buffer zone which separates the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communal zones.
This sector, with its base at the once fashionable but now crumbling Ledra Palace Hotel, runs through the old city of Nicosia which is surrounded by 16th century Venetian walls. Nicosia is worlds last divided capital. "

According to the history books, the origins of the city we today call Istanbul, formerly known as Byzantion (Byzantium), are still unclear.
After being re-settled by the Romans under Constantine I, also known as Emperor Constantinus (306-337 A.D.), during the decline of the Roman Empire in 330 the city was duly referred to as Deutera Roma or 'Second Rome, as well as Nea (New) Rome and designated as the capital. During this era it was customary to take the name of the founder as the basis of a city's name. Thus, the name Constantinopolis was adopted. It is said that the name Istanbul, however, came from the Byzantine period. Supposedly, the Byzantines never referred to the city by its actual name but by 'Polis' i.e., city, and when referring to the city' they said, 'Eist enpolin' (is-tin-polin). "

We woke to the sound of prayers wafting from the minarets of the Blue Mosque, the haunting sound that was to follow us throughout our journey. The verses of the Koran are chanted five times a day from mosques in every village and town in this country of surprises.
In homage to a dear friend who died recently and had asked me to write up our trip together five years before, I returned to Turkey, now accompanied by my artist friend Graham Davis.
Turkey is a huge peninsula that juts out into the Eastern Mediterranean with 5000 miles of coastline, and mountains twice the height of Blue Mountain Peak. We visited only a fraction of Anatolia, the region across the Bosphorus in Asia, but moved from dense forests, to salt lakes, gorges, and the extraordinary landscape of Cappadochia."

During World War I there were many reasons for propaganda, but the most common was simply the desire make your enemy look bad. Any propaganda organization intends to downplay the good side and emphasize the bad side of its enemies. The most well known example of this is the anti-German propaganda of World War I--the babies on bayonets, the starving Belgians, the rape of nuns. The primary intention of this propaganda was to draw neutrals to the side of Britain, the primary neutral of course being the United States. But propaganda is also useful as a morale builder for one's own side. It can make people feel they are fighting a holy crusade against evil. In some cases, especially in the second world war, this was true. There was a definite evil to be opposed. In the first war it was much harder to identify one side as more evil than the other, and thus propaganda was all the more needed."

'Since '92 there's been bitterness inside me' says Leyla Zana. Orhan Dogan finishes her thoughts like this: 'Miss Leyla would like, along with Ismail Hakki Karadayi, visit the mothers of those injured during the time of fighting, serve them food, visit them'. She wants to sit at the table with the mothers of those shot in the mountains. She wants to give direction to her life. But why Karadayi? Says Leyla Zana: 'Karadayi is a peace lover. When he was Head General of the Army, I was never bothered by his style. I was not able to form a link with him. But I wish that I could-I don't know if he would want to, but if he acccepted, I would head straight over to talk to him.'
The other night in Istanbul, I spoke for about three hours with Leyla Zana and Orhan Dogan. That day Ertugrul Ozkok wrote an article entitled 'Karadayi and Zana are in the same party.' Ozkok stressed in the article that in order for peace in the society, opposites must transcend their differences.
My conversation with Leyla Zana and Orhan Dogan began on this note. I too keep on repeating to myself how I wish such a meeting could take place, between Zana and Karadayi. But what a fantasy!
It seems that in order to turn dreams in reality, it is necessary to break old assumptions and leave the past behind. "

"EU-US Balance Turns into a Pincer
Turkey's search for a balance in international relations between the European Union (EU) and the US, is gradually turning into a pincer. Ankara had relied mostly on the EU at the start of membership negotiations, particularly to ensure a balance as a result of the pressures that emerged from the Israeli-US line, and also in order to breathe freely, but a series of incidents this time put Turkey under a two-sided pressure. MEMBER of the IMME research team, Muharrem Faiz, presented the major findings for the Turkish Cypriot press during the referenda of April 24 2004.
From the 10 papers circulating in the north, four were connected with political parties. In general, 95 per cent of front-page headlines were devoted to the Annan plan during the period in question. From these, 30 per cent were against the proposed solution or the procedure followed, 39 per cent were in favour of the plan and 26 per cent reflected a more balanced view.
Nearly half of all headline titles either belonged to Rauf Denktash (his own press releases against the plan or those who support it) or concerned the veteran leader (criticisms of him and his negative attitude towards the plan).
Yeniduzen, belonging to the party of Turkish Cypriot prime minister Mehmet Ali Talat, wrote 40 headlines in favour of the plan and one against, while Ortam (Mustafa Akincis paper) had 52 positive titles and only nine negative ones. Cumhuriyet (associated with Serdar Denktash, son of Rauf) was opposed to the proposed solution with eight negative and one positive title. Volkan belongs to consultants of Rauf Denktash, and was strongly opposed to the solution, with 70 negative titles about the plan. "

Cyprus is a strategic island located in the eastern Mediterranean. The island, which was ruled by the Ottomans for a long time, is full of signs of the atrocities carried out by Greek Cypriots against the Turkish residents of the island between 1960 and 1974. We now see that some people are trying to make us forget those incidents and are trying to bring Cyprus under Greek rule once again.
The Republic of Cyprus that was established by the 1960 Agreement was annulled by Makarios, and this move was followed by a genocide campaign against the Turks on the island. "

In Turkey his novels, chronicling the countrys upheavals, have made him as famous as a footballer. But Orhan Pamuk says its time to stop speaking for the nation and tell his own stories
Remember angst? Germans produced it, where the French had anomie; and we all know melancholy and tristesse. Now Orhan Pamuk, Turkeys leading novelist, and in Istanbul the chronicler of the inescapable decline of the great Ottoman metropolis and the disintegration of the Pamuk family within it, has given us hzn. Its hzn when wealth ebbs away; when the lovely wooden mansions of the pashas burn to the ground; when Pamuks mother sits up late, smoking and half-watching the TV, waiting for her erring husband to get home. Even love is doomed, for old-fashioned reasons: Pamuk wants to become an artist, and a nice girl wont marry one in 1960s Istanbul. In Istanbul Pamuk writes: I stay in the same city, on the same street, in the same house, gazing at the same view. Istanbuls fate is my fate: I am attached to this city because it has made me who I am. "

Turkish police were criticised for beating up protesters last month
Turkey has again postponed the introduction of a revamped penal code - just hours before it was due to come into force.
The two-month delay is all strangely redolent of the first parliamentary passage of the code.
Last September and October all seemed set fair for the passing of a new penal code to top off the extraordinary process of legislative reform that Turkey has put itself through over the past four years. "

Moreover, unlike the Armenians fervent belief in their allegations, we dont have a strong belief in the fact that we are right. I was thinking about this when I was talking with Justin McCarthy from the University of Louisville after his conference at Marmara University. The Armenian allegations are a great lie and their documents are false. We have finally surpassed China in successive growth rates, thus becoming the fastest-growing economy in the world for 2004. This is also the highest rate weve achieved since 1966.
One reason for this progress is that Turkey has at last been able to secure economic and political stability. Rising foreign capital inflow, depreciating exchange rates and cheaper import costs all helped our economic growth.
The expectation that Turkey will eventually get a date for EU membership talks also had a positive effect on all aspects of our economy, including the financial markets and real estate.
Another reason is that a large number of investments which had to be delayed during the 2001 economic crisis finally went through last year."

"Armenian test in Turkish-US ties
Friday, April 1, 2005
ANKARA - Turkish Daily News
The government held out hope that the United States would not allow congressional recognition of the allegations of an Armenian genocide at the hands of the late Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the 20th century, as the powerful Armenian lobby is preparing to submit a resolution to Congress next month.
Observers fear any U.S. recognition of the alleged genocide, which Turkey categorically denies, would have a destructive impact on the ties and say a Turkish government decision to approve broader U.S. access to Incirlik air base in southern Anatolia could help Turkey."
