The trouble with Holland and Hollande
I am sure the Dutch Consul General in Turkey is extremely disappointed.
Despite being the top investment destination for Turkish businessmen in the last decade and relations going back centuries, the country is fairly unknown to Turks. For example, I found out only recently that the mother of all asset bubbles, the Dutch tulip mania, actually started with bulbs imported from the Ottoman Empire much earlier than the Ottomans’ own Tulip Era.

Now that It Doesn’t Have to Impress the EU, Turkey Could Curtail Women’s Rights
Turkey, formerly eager for an invite into the European Union clubhouse, has drifted away from the continent it has played historical boogeyman to in the wake of the Arab Spring, and gravitated towards the more conservative values of an Arab world it sees an opportunity to dominate. As a result, according to the New York Times' Dan Bilefsky, human rights groups worry that renewed conservative vigor in Turkey is starting to erode women's rights.

Russo-Turkish relations encompass a multi-regional agenda from the Balkans to Central Asia, including the Caucasus and the Middle East and their bilateral energy relations. Much has been written about the strategic convergence of Russo-Turkish relations and contributing factors behind it. In contrast to Turkey’s strained relations with its traditional Western partners, Ankara’s ties with Moscow have noticeably strengthened in recent years. Turkey’s reorientation eastward in the past decade is attributable to three factors: the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the derailment of Turkish accession talks to join the EU, and Turkey’s dependence on Russia for its natural gas imports.

When the Cold War ended, more than a few European and American officials predicted that Turkey would decline rapidly in geopolitical significance. Without the Soviet threat, they said, Turkey’s role as a bulwark against communist expansion was finished and it was destined to be a second-tier power in the 21st century.

Mark Spencer, owner of Arsenal Consulting on Admiral's Hill, played a key part in finding forged documents that were crucial pieces of evidence in a major government trial in Turkey. Here, at his office, he points to several e-mail files he found to be falsified.
When Mark Spencer agreed to get involved in a new case earlier this year which involved a criminal trial in Turkey, he didn’t know what he was getting into.

TRIBECA REVIEW: ‘Beyond the Hill’
Director Emin Alper’s new film, Beyond the Hill, is one of the top highlights of the Tribeca Film Festival. The sensitive portrait of a Turkish family in crisis is an effecting piece of drama that leaves a lasting impression. The 94-minute feature has the unique ability to sneak up on viewers and surprise them with introspective character work, a smart plot and believable acting. If there were one movie that deserved a distribution deal beyond Tribeca, this may be it. The fact that the movie is Alper’s debut is even more reason to celebrate.

When the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan visited Tehran in May 2010, to offer support for the Brazilian project regarding the Iranian nuclear file, the conservative press in Iran described ErdoÄŸan as an example of wise leadership in the region. Some newspapers also devoted extensive column inches to ErdoÄŸan’s statements in support of Iran, particularly his critical stance towards Israel and the Western world’s view of Muslim states. Some commentators even considered Turkish-Iranian relations to be a model of stability and cooperation, arguing that since the signing of the Treaty of Qasr-e Shirin – or the Treaty of Zuhab as it is known in Turkey – in 1639 between the Ottoman and Safavid empires, borders have continually been respected; this agreement remains the basis for all border treaties between the two countries.

ISTANBUL — The other day Taraf, a Turkish language newspaper for which I write, ran a quarter-page ad depicting a pomegranate with a deep slash and the legend: “Some wounds do not heal with time.” The pomegranate is a symbol of the Armenian people, and in fine print you could make out the endorsement of many prominent Turkish Armenians for a gathering in Istanbul’s Taksim Square. The ad didn’t bother to explain the purpose of the assembly, leaving the date and time — April 24, 19:15 — to speak for itself.

Kazakhstan: ‘Allah' vodka pulled from shelves after Muslims protest in Kazakhstan -
Kazakh authorities say a new vodka brand that uses the word “Allah” on its bottles is being withdrawn from circulation after protests from outraged Muslims.
Officials in the northwestern city of Semey said in a statement Thursday that the local distributor of Baiterek vodka insists it has no reserve stocks.
Islam strictly forbids drinking alcohol. The use of the Arabic word for God in a decorative motif on the bottle has incensed believers in several Kazakh towns. The motif reads “Allah's Strength Is Enough For Everybody.”
Local media say makers of the liquor have apologized for the blasphemy, saying it was unaware as nobody in the company could read Arabic script. Ethnic Kazakhs are mainly Sunni Muslim, but religious attitudes are generally fairly relaxed.

Turkey started talks about joining the European Union back in 2005, but the process has been suspended since June 2010. The stalemate stems from Brussels' refusal to start negotiations on visa-free travel before Ankara signs a pact for the readmission of illegal migrants coming from its territory (those registered in 2011 by FRONTEX - the EU agency for external border security - were over 55,000, mainly from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria and the Northern Africa).

Tatarstan's stall at the annual East Mediterranean International Travel and Tourism exhibition in Istanbul.
Holidays to Tatarstan? Although Tatarstan’s stall happily attracted the interest of visitors to the Istanbul International Tourism Exhibition, the real situation is sadly rather different. Whilst thousands of tourists from Tatarstan spend their annual vacations on the beaches of Antalya, Kazan still remains a relatively unknown destination for Turkish tourists. It is almost impossible to buy a Tatarstan tour in Istanbul, and travel agencies in Kazan confirm this, complaining that the number of tourists from Turkey is simply too low.

The minister of culture and tourism tried to calm the resulting uproar. But Erdogan shut him up, repeating, "Yes, I said the monument is monstrous and the responsible mayor should make sure it disappears as quickly as possible."
Early in 2011, while visiting the Turkish city of Kars, less than 20 miles (30 kilometres) from the Armenian frontier. the country's neo-fundamentalist prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Justice and Development Party (known by its local initials as AKP), discovered a memorial to the Armenian victims of Turkish massacres in 1915.

The transformation of Pera in the past 10 years has been extraordinary. When I first started coming to this side of Istanbul, just after the millennium, Pera was old, dirty and unnerving. There were streets off Istiklal Caddesi where, as a tourist, you did not walk. The bar in the Pera Palace Hotel was so dingy I'd swear it had not been painted since Agatha Christie holed up in a room with a rickety brass bedstead.

Turkey must be treated fairly
I have always held the view that Turkey’s place is in the European Union but that this presents the EU with a formidable integration challenge because of its size, level of economic development and culture for which both must prepare well.
All the states that have joined the EU since 2004 have had to satisfy the Copenhagen Criteria before they were allowed in, although for some of them these were considerably relaxed. This certainly cannot be said of Turkey.

Ankara's concern for the Uighurs has set an example for other democracies.
BY NURY A. TURKEL
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to China last week was bound to be notable, since this was the first visit by a Turkish head of government in 27 years. It was particularly high profile, however, because his first stop was Urumqi, capital of the restive Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region that Uighurs call East Turkistan.

In order to understand the initial reasons behind the creation of the Turkish-Israeli alliance, one must also recognize why that alignment came to an end. The cause was not within the partnership itself nor was it due to the 2008/2009 Gaza War or the 2010 flotilla events; rather this resulted from the Turkish government’s changing goals and identity. The “Arab Spring” has pushed forward this transformation in Turkey’s rulers while also showing that the new strategy does not work.

Syria, Turkey and the camp cover-up

It's like a well-choreographed play that Turkish officials have spent countless hours rehearsing. First, they helped form "committees" inside every camp to speak on behalf of the refugees. Now, they carefully scrub down the facilities only before admitting visitors, deny access to most media outlets, and even handpick refugees to speak with the press and outside organizations.

Turkish Meat Treat Has Made Some Rich, but It Causes Political Indigestion, Too
By JAMES ANGELOS
In fast food, Germany is better known for wurst. But few German street snacks are more appreciated than the Turkish döner kebab.
Brought to Germany four decades ago, the döner is to Berlin what pizza is to New York: a transplanted food that has taken on a new life in its adopted land. Today, there are more döner stands in Berlin than in Istanbul. And about 720 million servings are sold nationally each year according to an industry association.

The Challenges Turkey and the EU Are Facing
The Challenges Turkey and the EU Are Facing
Published: 10:44, Adelina Marini, Sofia
The issue of Turkey's accession to the European Union will again emerge on the agenda with a new impetus with the approach of the Cypriot presidency of the Council of the EU from July 1st. Those will be 6 months of huge test both for Turkey and the Union, given the already stated intentions of Ankara to boycott the presidency because of unresolved disputes, and the EU's response that it would not accept threats. Turkey always evokes heated debates in the entire union and especially in some member states. In March there were debates in the European Parliament too on the European Commission progress report on Turkey from the autumn of last year.
