"UN initiative launched to bridge the gap between East and West
In a bid to bridge the gap between East and West, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan launched a new initiative, co-sponsored by Turkey and Spain, which aims to overcome hostile perceptions that sow discord and foment violence. The initiative called 'Aliiance of Civilizations', intends 'to respond to the need for a committed effort by the international community – both at the institutional and civil levels – to bridge divides and overcome prejudice, misconceptions, and polarization which potentially threaten world peace.' Mr Annan's spokesman said speaking from UN headquarters in New York."
