Chirac claims to support Turkey's membership of the EU; Merkel believes that Ankara should aspire to nothing more than 'privileged partner' status with the EU. Her view is very close to that of Sarkozy: Europe's people are opposed to Turkish membership and after the French and Dutch rejections of the EU referendum, the Union should 'concentrate on its future:'
'We must discuss the limits of enlargement,' she said, 'we need borders, and people need to know where those borders are.'"
