EU happy with progress on trade - Concern over illegal immigrants

"EU happy with progress on trade - Concern over illegal immigrants
By Jean Christou

JUST OVER one million euros worth of goods has been traded from north to the south since implementation of the Green Line regulations almost a year ago, the EU Commission said yesterday, while expressing concern over the number of illegal immigrants crossing into the Republic.

In its first annual report on implementation of the regulations, designed to aid the economy in the north following Turkish Cypriot acceptance of the Annan plan in May 2004, the Commission said the amount of goods moved had been limited and that daily crossings had increased worries about the proper surveillance of the Green Line.

The Commission said the regulation had proved to be a stable legal frame for the daily crossing of thousands of Cypriots as well as for other EU citizens who can move freely within Cyprus."
