"Former rivals pay tribute to the British for a helping hand

Turks are praising Britain's role in helping them to achieve their long-cherished dream of joining the European Union.
'The English were the only ones who unhesitatingly supported us,' said Serap Gormez, a university student. 'We owe them a big debt.' That may be an exaggeration, but many in Turkey acknowledge that Britain promoted the country and helped it to refine its EU strategy."
