The Journal of Turkish Weekly:Before It is Too Late: Turkey and Europe

"Before It is Too Late: Turkey and Europe
Sedat Laciner

The world is drifting towards insanity. The ranks of those hoping for a clash of civilizations is swelling. Moreover, the mistakes committed are forcing control to be lost. The flames are about to burst into a great fire. After a while, it will be even more difficult to halt this course. Iraq, Palestine, and Chechnya have turned into marshlands breeding religious fanaticism. It is clearly visible that the problem in these regions will not be solved for many years to come. Radical factions are taking the steps necessary to strengthen each other's hands. Assaults and killings are at a zenith. All these events threaten the EU as much as Turkey. No matter how tightly the borders are closed, how tough the legislations, and how much the problems are ignored, both Turkey and the EU are at the epicenter of the problems and both are being threatened by them. Following the Cold War, Turkey's peculiarity in thwarting inter-civilizational tension and religious/cultural fanaticism has been suggested not only by Turkey, but by the EU on numerous occasions."
