Turkey's aspirations for European Union membership are the 'glue of political cohesion in Turkey' and the bloc should not give the impression that it will keep raising barriers for Turkish entry, an editorial in the Financial Times said yesterday.
The newspaper said last week's shocking attack on the Council of State, which left a senior judge dead, highlighted the �growing rift between the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, with its roots in political Islam, and the secular establishment, militant defenders of the legacy of Kemal Atatürk� and warned that the perceived EU intentions to not let Turkey in were deteriorating the situation."
