Those who care to read this column might remember that some months ago I ventured to suggest that if the referendum on the Annan plan had been repeated recently, the Turkish Cypriots on the island would have voted against it, that is to say they would agree with Papadopoulos and the Greek Cypriot rejection of the Annan plan. The reason for that, I suggested then, was that the Turkish Cypriots on the island were not rewarded for their positive stance towards the Annan plan. It is more than true that since the April 2004 referendum none of the promises by the European Union were kept and, consequently, the Turkish Cypriots were punished for their positive vote rather than the Greek Cypriots for their negative one."
