Turkey was so enthusiastic in joining a club that it thought would be a global heavyweight, generous enough to share its wisdom and high humanitarian ideals as well as its craft in the production of wealth, solving intractable problems by using soft power and the logic of conciliation. On the other hand Europe boasted of its lofty civilization that for centuries it tried to spread to backward or 'savage' populations throughout the world by force and destruction if necessary. "
