It is highly important to explain the Arab world's perception of the Justice and Development Partys (AKP) landslide victory in the general elections held in November 2002, as this is mainly seen as historic defeat of the extreme secular political forces which were usually accused of being the enemy of Turkey's Islamic identity which monopolized power for decades. Some Arab commentators and intellectuals, however, described the outcome of the election as a similar defeat of the traditional conservative political Islamic trend dubbed reactionary and against full-fledged democracy that secures the fundamental freedoms of society."
