This week was the second anniversary of the visit to Ankara by Romano Prodi, the former president of the European Commission, though I do not expect many people noticed it.
A lot of things have changed since Mr. Prodi was in Turkey and indeed it would seem from remarks he reportedly made last year that perhaps even his own attitude towards the Turkish candidacy has altered. Still, negotiations for Turkey's EU accession have got under way. But one point which Mr. Prodi emphasized in his speech to Parliament in January 2004 has not changed at all.
