SIX people have appeared in court in the north charged with forging Republic of Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot travel documents allegedly been used to smuggle numerous illegal immigrants into Europe.

The six were arrested after what the police described as “a lengthy operation” aimed at smashing an “international ring” of human traffickers. So far, the ongoing operation has led to six people being charged, while three more suspects are still wanted by Turkish Cypriot police.

According to a statement given by the police to the Cyprus Mail yesterday, the ring is believed to have successfully smuggled numerous people into EU countries via Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus by providing them with sophisticated copies of both ‘TRNC’ and Republic of Cyprus identity cards and passports. Printers, computers, official seals and documents were seized by police in the operation."
