"Defiant Matsakis returns to Brussels
By Constantine Markides

MEP MARIOS Matsakis announced yesterday as he left for Brussels that he intended to report to the President of the European Parliament that Turkish Cypriot authorities had kidnapped him after he tried to deliver a cake and chocolates to Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

On December 31, Matsakis walked to the Ledra Palace checkpoint bearing a cake and chocolates, which he claimed he wanted to present in a goodwill gesture to Talat. After refusing to show his identity card, he was told to wait, and a few minutes later was arrested by plainclothes officers.

In November, Matsakis snatched a Turkish flag from a contested unmanned observation post in Louroujina in the buffer zone. After the incident, Turkish Cypriot authorities warned that he would be arrested if he crossed over again.
