Authorities have begun culling poultry in the western Turkey tourist region of Aydin after four people were hospitalized with bird flu-like symptoms.
Three of the cases were in the regional capital of Aydin while one patient was from the popular summer tourist resort town of Kusadasi. The Anadolu news agency reported on Tuesday that Umut Sagbas, 3, had been playing with a sick chicken at his home in Kusadasi before falling ill. In all cases reported so far close contact to sick poultry has been the reason for catching the virus but news of a case in the Aegean port of Kusadasi could have devastating effects on summer tourism.
