"Rice tests troubled waters in Ankara
Tuesday, February 8, 2005
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, perhaps the most important driving force behind Bush administration's Iraq policy, met with Turkish officials on a mission to assess the level of trouble now plaguing a decades-old friendship when she arrived here as part of her first tour abroad.
Rice came at a time when Turkish public opinion is exceptionally negative towards the United States because of the rift over U.S. policies in Iraq. The negative feelings are so high that a majority of Turks, according to a recent public survey, see the United States as a threat to Turkey. "
