DISY boss Nicos Anastassiades yesterday described his talks with Turkish leaders as constructive, saying his contacts in Ankara helped gauge the Turkish side�s stance on the Cyprus issue.

But Anastassiades, who stirred up a storm with his comments on the role of the Turkish military, would not go into details about what was discussed with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and officials.

Speaking to the media soon after arriving at Larnaca airport, Anastassiades said it would be improper to divulge the contents of his meetings before briefing President Papadopoulos and the National Council. But he did reveal that the talks with Erdogan revolved around EU-Turkish relations, the Cyprus problem and relations between DISY and Turkey�s Justice and Development Party (AKP).

�Our talks with Mr Erdogan were useful and took place in a constructive climate,� Anastassiades said, adding:

�The experience gleaned from our trip to Turkey confirms our long-held belief that� we need to have positions and lay a claim to our rightful demands. It is our side that should take that step forward� we must be determined, effective, bold.�"
