"No Action but Promise from EU Before TRNC Election

Before the crucial general elections to be held on February 20th in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the European Union (EU) repeated its promises to Cypriot Turks; however, did not make any concrete commitments.
In a surprise meeting yesterday with the EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Brussels TRNC Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat was only once again reassured they had EU support. At the meeting, three EU Commission by-laws, which would lift the isolation of the TRNC, but could not be put into effect for eight months due to the Greek's hindrance and a possible UN plan were focused on. Talat sent Barroso the message, 'If you do not remove the isolation for us, the Greek leader Tasos Papadopulous will never come to the table.' "
