"Turkey's Accession To The EU
Developments in Turkish politics in the short term future which will affect its politico-religious identity will be crucial. This was the conclusion of Dr Mehmet Asutay who addressed the Muslim Institute Discussion Circle in London on February 12th.
The purpose of the MI Discussion Circle is to provide a forum where a broad and diverse range of Muslim thinkers and activists can air, sound out, argue, and critically debate, in an attitude of mutual respect, issues and questions pertaining to Muslim thought and contemporary Muslim rethinking of Islam. The first session, convened by Dr. Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, took place on the 16th of March 2002 and it has continued to meet once a month since then. It has benefited from the participation of well known thinkers, authors and commentators such as Abdoolkarim Soroush, Asghar Ali Engineer, Hasan Hanafi, Sheikh Rasheed Ghannouchi, Tariq Modood, Tariq Ramadan, S. Sayyid and Zia Sardar to name but a few. Its most significant achievement has perhaps been to create a platform where Muslims can engage intellectually with other Muslims on issues of common concern in a spirit of critical rather than dogmatic engagement."
