"Sarkozy doubts Turkish EU membership

PARIS (Reuters) - Nicolas Sarkozy, the French conservative with clear presidential ambitions, has renewed his call for a 'privileged partnership' with Turkey rather than the membership the European Union has agreed to negotiate.
'If Turkey were European, we'd know it,' said the head of the governing UMP party, reaffirming his rivalry with President Jacques Chirac who supported the opening of entry talks with Ankara during the EU summit in Brussels last week."
