Germany's conservative opposition leaders expressed confidence on Tuesday that the European Union would make clear to Turkey next week that Ankara must settle for a looser partnership if EU membership talks failed.
The Christian Democratic Union party opposes Turkish membership of the EU and is proposing pursuit of a 'privileged partnership' - involving closer ties but not membership - as a better option. "
