The Greek Cypriot government warned Monday that Ankara must recognise Cyprus through an EU protocol agreement, as agreed at the Brussels summit, or Nicosia would veto Ankara's accession bid. Turkey must satisfy all the pre-conditions, including the recognition of Cyprus, if President Tassos Papadopoulos is to agree to accession talks beginning in October 2005, said Kypros Chrysostomides. 'The president of the republic has announced he will not give his consent to the start of negotiations if Turkey does not comply,' the spokesman told reporters. 'Turkey is obliged to take steps by October 3, 2005 and not us. If it wants to begin accession talks, it must take these steps.' "
