"World Bank to support Turkey's EU accession
20/12/2004

The World Bank has welcomed the European Union's decision to start entry talks with Turkey.

The accession talks, which would begin in October 2005, have received widespread enthusiasm, marking the possibility of the EU accepting its first Muslim country.

In a statement, regional vice president for Europe and Central Asia, Shigeo Katsu, said the World Bank 'commits itself to helping Turkey implement the economic and social reforms which are central to its quest to become a member of the European Union'.

He added that the bank would do everything necessary to pursue essential pre-accession reforms."
