Many of Turkey's newspapers greet the terms set out by the EU for the start of membership talks as a challenge to national honour.
'The EU's tough conditions', says Cumhuriyet's headline; 'Cyprus crisis with the EU,' proclaims Radikal.
Other papers are more optimistic. Sabah montages a picture of Kemal Ataturk, founder of the Turkish republic, into a modern Council of Europe setting and says the logic of Turkish history leads to Europe."
