"Soder: 'Negotiations does not Mean EU Membership'
Secretary-general of the ruling German Christian Social Union Party Markus Soder has said negotiations carried out with candidate countries should not be considered as membership. Soder implied that Turkey is not a normal candidate country like Bulgaria or Romania.
Soder sent “Bild am Sonntag” newspaper an article titled “There should be no haste in EU membership” and defended that if Bulgaria and Romania fail to realize the requirements of EU membership, they should be granted membership in early 2008 not in 2007.
Soder said EU progress reports should be examined in detail and a decision should be taken accordingly, adding, “Negotiations should not be directly considered as the EU membership. This is the case for Turkey in particular.” "
