ANKARA - In the midst of the diplomatic wasteland, when hundreds of Libyans are being buried, the Egyptian revolution doesn't know where to turn, Tunisia has been forgotten and the news out of Yemen is well inside the newspaper, one island of stability stands out: Turkey. It's true that from Israel's perspective that's a shoal in a stormy sea, but when a Turkish research institute, whose directors are very close to the prime minister, convenes a conference with Israelis to examine the future of relations between the two countries, you have to check whether the rocky soil may yet yield grass."

“VOTE for AK. On one level, the outcome seems predictable. Opinion polls have consistently suggested that the mild Islamists who came to power in 2002 will bag a third term of single-party rule, with over 40% of the vote."

Turkey’s geographical location and size bestows on the state strategic importance. Indeed, Turkey carries great regional and international weight. Diverging from the West has serious consequences for the balance of power in the Greater Middle East and for global politics. Currently, the Middle East is divided between ascending Islamic Iran and its radical allies, and pro-Western moderate forces—Israel and most Arab states. Until recently, Turkey appeared to belong to the pro-Western camp, but it crossed the Rubicon when Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Iran in October 2009."

"Egypt/Turkey-Israel: ‘A clean break’
Written by Eric Walberg Thursday, 24 February 2011 03:11
It is not Israel backed by the distant US that inherits the Ottoman mantle of hegemony in the Middle East, but some combination of Turkey and Egypt, says Eric Walberg
While Egypt’s revolution was very much about domestic matters -- bread and butter, corruption, repression -- its most immediate effects have been international. Not for a long time has Egypt loomed so large in the region, to both friend and foe. At least 13 of the 22 Arab League countries are now affected: Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen."

With the daunting task of transitioning to a democratic, civil state ahead of it, Egypt’s parties and institutes can learn from Turkey’s experience

Much has been made of the “Turkish model” as an example for Egypt, but no national experience can serve as a model for another country, nor is the Turkish experience without serious problems. Also, Ankara has been disappointingly slow to embrace democratic revolutions in the Arab world, or to condemn regime repression in Tehran. Nevertheless, there are three important elements in the Turkish experience that are very relevant to Egypt today."

Efraim Inbar is professor of political studies at Bar-Ilan University and director of the Begin-Sadat (BESA) Center for Strategic Studies. This essay is excerpted from his Winter 2011 Orbis article. The author acknowledges the research help of Elizabeth Stull.
Until recently, Turkey appeared to belong to the pro-Western camp, but it crossed the Rubicon when Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Iran in October 2009. Turkey sided with Iran on the nuclear issue when its Foreign Minister, Davutoglu, in a meeting with Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili, stressed his country's support for Tehran’s “peaceful nuclear program.” During the meeting held in Tehran, Ahmet Davutoglu also announced Turkey’s capital Ankara’s firm stance on the consolidation of ties with Tehran. [1] The relationship with Iran remains the litmus test for Turkey’s Islamist leanings. During a state visit to Tehran earlier this month, the Turkish president, Abdullah Gull, declared Turkey’s desire for further improvement of bilateral relations, unperturbed by the violent repression of opposition demonstrators by the Iranian regime. ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Foreigners fled the turmoil in Libya by the thousands on Wednesday, climbing aboard ships, ferries and planes or fleeing in overloaded vans to the country's borders with Egypt and Tunisia. Tripoli's airport was overwhelmed with stranded people seeking a way out.
Two Turkish ships whisked 3,000 citizens away from the chaos engulfing the North African nation and a 600-foot U.S.-chartered ferry arrived to evacuate Americans to the nearby Mediterranean island of Malta, a five-hour journey. Several countries — including Russia, Germany and Ukraine — sent more planes in to help their citizens escape an increasingly unstable situation."

Europeans wanting to flee Libya violence are unable to use evacuation flights - EU and Turkey or UN could temporarily take-over Benghazi Airport?
Several European countries are sending planes to evacuate their citizens from strife-torn Libya as continuing violence threatens economic projects.
Italy, Greece and the Netherlands are sending transport planes to Libya to get their citizens out. Turkey, Austria and Portugal have already done so while airports were still open.
Most of the evacuation aircraft are now sitting on runways in Europe, because it's now nearly become impossible to use air transport since runways at Benghazi airport have been destroyed in the anti-government uprising and the Tripoli airport is hardly functioning because many flight controllers have not shown up for work.
The time has probably come for the EU and Turkey, or the UN, if they can get their act together, to temporarily take military control of the Benghazi Airport to fly expats out instead of waiting while the situation worsens.

Norman Stone Explains Why Egypt Isn't Turkey - Newsweek
"Egypt Isn’t Turkey
If history is any guide, there will not be an Atatürk in Cairo.
A portrait of Ataturk, the founder of modern secular Turkey, hangs in a store window in Istanbul, Turkey in 2007. Q. Sakamaki / Redux
A hundred years ago, Egyptians looked down on Turks: etrak bi itrak, ran the pun. “Turks are clods.” Egyptians had Westernized first, had a modern Army that defeated the Turks twice, and then got a huge amount of money from the tolls of the Suez Canal. Cairo had resplendent mosques and religious schools, whereas the Turks, speaking a Central Asian language the grammar of which was tortuous and the vocabulary limited to physical activities of a rudimentary nature, did not rate. Egyptian money was all over the Turkish capital, and there are still splendid buildings to mark that era."

"Turkish Ingredients and the flavours of Turkish Food
Turkish food is considered to be one of the top cuisines in the world, up there with French and Chinese. Turkish cuisine does vary a lot depending on the region but does share strong similarities to Mediterranean food and Middle Eastern foods.
Yoghurt is one of the most important elements of Turkish cuisine. It can be enjoyed in its simplest form but to add some grated cucumber, fresh mint and salt, you'll have very easily whipped up cacik, or what is more commonly known in Australia by it Greek name Tzatziki. Yoghurt is added into soups, cakes, made into sauces and marinades. It has many uses including the national cold drink named Ayran."
