Turkey’s Syrian Tangle by Javier Solana - Project Syndicate

Turkey’s Syrian Tangle

MADRID – As 2015 draws to a close, new steps – albeit small and tentative – have been taken toward ending the war in Syria. The United Nations Security Council has adopted Resolution 2254, expressing its backing for a transition out of the conflict, and the International Syria Support Group has set a date for its next meeting, to be held next month. But the ISSG comprises both allies and adversaries – for example, Saudi Arabia and Iran – meaning that continued progress will be a challenge.

Turkey: Kurdish Towns Report Lack of Water, Food Amid State Crackdown
December 31, 2015
Headlines

In Turkey, residents of the southeastern town of Cizre are protesting the lack of water, food and electricity as a two-week government crackdown continues. Cizre is one of more than a dozen towns under mandatory curfew for over two weeks. The Turkish government says it is carrying out a massive military operation to target members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, known as the PKK. At least 10,000 Turkish troops, backed by tanks, have been deployed. But local residents say the military offensive has led to repression of Kurds at large, displacing an estimated 200,000 people and resulting in civilian casualties, including the recent death of a five-year-old boy and a three-month-old girl. In Cizre, shopkeeper Ramazan Simsek spoke out.

“Aid organizations and rights group Amnesty International say Turkish authorities are rounding up scores, maybe hundreds, of Syrian migrants off the streets, sometimes targeting beggars, and sending them to detention centers. The process has resulted in the deportation of some back to Syria against their will, they say. In a report this month, Amnesty said it had interviewed 50 refugee families who had been detained. It said more than 100 had been deported. Turkey denies it is forcing any refugees back to Syria and says it is only rounding up Syrians affiliated with crime.”

When the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011, Turkey was one of the earliest countries to invest heavily in the overthrow of the Assad regime. Despite a decade of warming relations with Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was making a bid to become the region’s dominant power. The situation in Syria has since changed dramatically—but the Erdogan strategy has not.

Turkey's religious conservatives bemoan 'dangers of Christmas'

As usual at this time of the year, the debate in Turkey on whether Muslims should celebrate the New Year erupts. Christmas and New Year's celebrations are not banned in Turkey, as is the case in Tajikistan, Somalia and Brunei. But the arguments used in those countries that such celebrations are "contrary to Islamic culture, which could damage the faith of the Muslim community" are not foreign to hard-core conservatives who oppose such festivities in Turkey.

Turkey’s Weasel Problem

By Linh Dinh

Though we head into 2016 without a direct war between the US and Russia, such a conflict still hovers over mankind. It’s hard to imagine Uncle Sam relinquishing his supremacy without a crazed fight. By abetting Turkey in shooting down that Russian plane, the US achieved one important objective, at least, and that’s scuttling the Russia, Turkey natural gas pipeline, the Blue Stream. Through its EU vassals, the US is now trying to block the expansion of Nord Stream, a pipeline that goes directly from Russia to Germany. The American-directed regime change in the Ukraine was also an attempt to interfere with Russia’s gas export. Energy is Russia’s economic lifeline and its political leverage. Rupture that advantage, and you cripple Russia, make it compliant to your wishes. It ain’t gonna happen.

In the just concluded ‘Heart of Asia’ ministerial conference in Pakistan, Turkey was well present there to map out Afghanistan’s security and stability. In fact, it was Turkey which had held the first ministerial conference on ‘Heart of Asia in November 2011. A NATO member that straddles Eastern Europe and West Asia, however, is in the eyes of storm ever since it downed a Russian jet fighter over the Syrian sky. Though not overtly siding with Moscow, several countries have questioned Turkey’s merit to become European Union. Czech President Milos Zeman was very harsh in his comment against Turkey.

How Turkey’s foreign affairs ‘strongman’ left his mark

Without any doubt, Feridun Sinirlioglu, undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, is Turkey’s “strongman” in foreign affairs. He’s not at the level of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan or Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, but he is seen as the “architect of Turkey’s Middle East policy,” which has come under severe criticism. Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry is the highest position for any career diplomat, and Sinirlioglu has been serving under that title for six years. Nobody in the history of the ministry has kept the title while simultaneously having the title of foreign minister, but Sinirlioglu did. He was the foreign minister while preserving his portfolio as the undersecretary during the interim period between the election of June 7 and the rerun election of November 1.

Will Turkey end up stuck between Kurds, Russia? - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

Will Turkey end up stuck between Kurds, Russia?

An old Turkish proverb says, “You can’t carry two watermelons under one arm,” meaning that two big tasks should not be tackled at the same time. These days, the Ankara regime seems to be attempting exactly that. At home, it is waging a war on the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), and regionally, it is sliding into a cold war with Russia that carries the risk of heated confrontation. As a natural outcome, these two wars could draw Russia and the PKK together, creating a tough challenge for Turkey.

Untangling Turkey’s Middle East allegiances

Turkey, in a sticky web of allegiances, shares mutual enemies with the Islamic State.

ISTANBUL — The northwestern corner of Syria is home to a dizzying spectrum of anti-Assad forces. Weapons — and fighters — have amassed in the area in large part thanks to Turkey’s “open door” policy, which makes the passage relatively painless. When Turkey’s ethnic brethren, the Turkmen, recently became the targets of Russian air strikes — prompting, perhaps, Turkey’s decision to shoot down a Russian fighter jet on November 24 — the incident brought Turkey’s murky relationship with a tangled web of jihadist groups to the fore.

‘US was informed about Turkey’s deployment in Iraq’

First, Turkey sent troops to a military camp in northern Iraq. Baghdad objected. Then, Turkey moved some of them to another base nearby. Yet it didn’t suffice. Baghdad asked Ankara to withdraw completely. More surprisingly, the U.S. called on Turkey to pull any unauthorized military forces. Last but not least, on the very same day, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) attacked the camp in question.

ORHAN OSMANOGLU cradles a French handkerchief embossed with the letter H. “This is all I have left that’s my great-great-grandfather’s, the caliph’s,” he says. His family has fallen far since those illustrious days. Abdulhamid II lived in a palace, Yildiz, in the heart of Ottoman Istanbul; Orhan lives in a high-rise at the end of an Istanbul bus route. Europe’s royals flocked to caliphal functions, but when Orhan’s daughter married, Turkey’s present rulers stayed away. Worst of all, an Iraqi impostor has stolen the title his family bore for hundreds of years. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s barbaric outfit, Islamic State (IS), promises to restore the caliphate. Does Mr Baghdadi know what he is talking about?

Global Economy: The global impact of the US interest rate rise - by Kamal Ahmed

When America stirs, the rest of the world takes notice.

Rising US interest rates could mean higher debt repayments for emerging market governments and businesses - as the amount owed is denominated in dollars.

And with higher interest rates in America, investment capital will be encouraged across the Atlantic and away from Asia in the hunt for better returns.

That could affect Europe as well.

On the upside, the stronger dollar which has followed the rise might be good for European and Asian economies as it means exports to America are cheaper.

INTERVIEW: Nilgün Önder on neoliberalism and state intervention in Turkey since 1980

William Armstrong - william.armstrong@hdn.com.tr

The effects of the 1980 military coup are still bitterly contested in Turkey today. The intervention put an end to bloody street clashes among left-wing and right-wing militants, but it also unleashed a period of fierce repression and imposed a nationalist-conservative constitution that is still in force today. The generals also kicked off a root-and-branch transformation of the Turkish economy, which became an early laboratory for IMF and World Bank-supported restructuring programs that opened the country up to global market forces.

The need for Turkey’s reform

Turkey is coming under increased pressure from European partners to make a return to, irrespective of what it’s called, the “peace process,” the “Kurdish opening” or “to strive for national togetherness” - whatever that means. The European Union is taking a cynical approach to its relationship with Turkey and, in the process, undercutting the liberal values that underpin it. Although this may give some short-term benefit to leaders such as Germany’s Angela Merkel, who is facing domestic pressure as a result of mishandling the refugee crisis, it could store up trouble for the future.

(CNN)The shooting down of a Russian jet that Turkey says violated its airspace near the Syrian border has further ratcheted up tensions between the two countries.
