InterChurch Families: CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM MARRIAGES
CHRISTIAN-MUSLIM MARRIAGES
Gé Speelman of Utrecht University in the Netherlands spoke on Christian-Muslim marriages during the Graz European Ecumenical Assembly in 1997. "The Muslim partner is often confronted with what most people around him think is natural, obvious, self-evident; he/her is the other, the one who has to prove him/her self. Many Muslim partners find they have to defend their faith against attacks which associate Islam with intolerance, backwardness and irrationality. In reaction, many Muslims become very much aware of their cultural and religious heritage. As one Muslim man said: “I would never have known so much about Islam if I had stayed at home and married an Egyptian girl.”
Another factor is that interfaith partners are seen as representatives of their communities. The Turkish Muslim represents the “terrible Turks” who have shaped the history of so many Eastern European countries. The German wife is the “imperialist European” whose community has been responsible for so much repression and bloodshed. Many problems in an interfaith marriage are exactly the same as those experienced by many other couples. But in their case, family and friends are looking out for problems; when they occur, they are defined as arising from differences in culture. A Dutch woman said she did not want to recognize the serious communication problem in her relationship because she was determined to prove to those who said it would never work that her marriage was fantastically successful. The partners had put off talking about their problems until it was too late.
Loved ones want to be more than merely “that Christian”, or “that Muslim”. Of course, they are also “a Christian” and “a Muslim” – much of what we are ties up with our religious traditions. German theologian Ulrich Dietzfelbinger, who described, in a lecture he gave in 1989, his relationship with his Turkish Muslim wife. He describes his tendency to reduce the differences in their beliefs to minor points, the pull to reduce their faith to the lowest common denominator. “After all, we both believe in Almighty God.” In the end, he recognizes that this way of reducing their differences is a way of denying them, leaving both partners with very little faith at all. What he learns is that one should not try to make the other the same as oneself. With new eyes he looks at the doctrine of incarnation. It is strange that God has community with a human being (and therefore with all human beings) in such a way that God is in his/her utmost being qualified by that humanity, while at the same time human beings are not deified and God remains God. Is there not in this strange incarnation something analogous to his marriage, where only love is the guarantor that he respects his partner as being inalienably other, different, and yet at one with himself? Maybe we should just let this question stand."

Destruction of Turkish Outpost by PKK Leads to Counterterrorism Reforms
10/30/2008 - By Emrullah Uslu (from Terrorism Focus, October 30) - The PKK’s October 3 attack on the Aktutun military outpost sparked a controversy over whether Turkish counterterrorism strategy is on the right track. In its three decades old battle against the PKK, the Aktutun attack marked the first time the Turkish Armed Forces (Turk Silahli Kuvvetleri - TSK) was strongly criticized by mainstream media outlets. Two major factors played a role in the surprisingly harsh criticism. First, despite the fact that the PKK has organized four attacks on Aktutun outposts in the last year, the military failed to successfully defend its outpost, with 17 soldiers losing their lives. Second, the TSK failed to manage the sequence of events after the attack."

Cruising: From Byzantium to the Cold War - Telegraph

On our voyage around the Black Sea, we seemed to journey through time as well as space as different places hinted at past centuries and civilisations. We caught glimpses of the Ottoman Empire; of Stalin's Russia; of the Crimea at the time of the Charge of the Light Brigade; of Odessa's vibrant, musical heritage; and of the deliciously decadent world of Queen Marie of Romania. Only the sea could feasibly link these colourful, wonderfully evocative locations, bypassing the daunting frontier-post friction of an overland trip. "

So after six years of non-stop growth, the Turkish stock market, its currency as well as the growth rate have finally taken a hit. The article is quick to point out that Turkish economy has done well after the last intervention by the IMF during the crisis of 2001. The article, unsurprisingly, assumes that IMF is responsible for the successful growth registered by Turkey (as opposed giving due credit to the “hot” money flow into emerging markets during this time period causing littler bubbles in their domestic scenes, for instance) and further elaborates that Turkish economy does well in the presence of “external anchors”."

Turkey's non permanent membership to the United Nations Security Council became a diplomatic gain while the country is struggling with the global financial crisis and security problems on the northern Iraqi border. Prime Minister Erdoğan interpreted the result as an opportunity to undertake a global role. It is true that Turkey, applying for a membership in 2003, lobbied so much and even knocked on the doors of genocide leaders of Africa for five years. It did not actualize by saying There is no friend of the Turk except the Turk! "

GENERALS IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE ARE HARMING THE AKP - Eurasia Daily Monitor
By Emrullah Uslu
Tuesday, October 28, 2008
In recent months the visibility of military generals in the public sphere has increased, creating the impression that Turkey has two legislative and two executive bodies, one elected civilian and one military. Former minister Hasan Celal Guzel claims that the civilian Prime Minister Erdogan is, in fact, subservient to the military Prime Minister Basbug (Today’s Zaman, October 27). Three interrelated issues have made the military visible in the public sphere. First, the way the new Chief of Turkish General Staff, General Ilker Basbug performs his job makes him and his staff more visible. Second, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has increased its terror campaign, which has brought the military into the spotlight once again. Third, since the Ergenekon trial began, alleged ties between Ergenekon and the armed forces have also affected the public visibility of the military."

Common Values and Common Interests? The Bush Legacy in US-Turkish Relations
Mark R. Parris
Insight Turkey, Vol. 10, No. 3, 2008, pp. 5-14
American and Turkish leaders typically describe ties between the U.S. and Turkey as based on “common values and interests.” Yet given that the Bush administration’s relationship with Turkey has been marked by dysfunction and crisis, is that still true? A tendency to see Turkey as a function of Washington’s big idea of the moment, insensitivity to a broadening perception in Turkey of U.S. disregard for Turkish interests, inaction in the face of PKK terror, weak leadership on energy security, and schizophrenia toward Turkey’s internal politics have left U.S.–Turkish relations worse than when George W. Bush came to office. If U.S. and Turkish interests remain largely convergent at the strategic level, a more independent Turkish diplomacy will likely be part of the Bush legacy. As for “common values,” there is reason to hope that the real damage done to mutual perceptions is reversible."

Placing the immigrants' integration into the German society at the very heart of its state policy after many years of denial and neglect, Germany is finally dedicating time, money and energy for progress on this still unresolved matter.
From the Turkish perspective, any deviation from the old pattern, the so-called denial policy, and diagnosis of the “disease” by the coalition government led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, a Christian Democrat, represent a significant turning point. The parallel societies built up from differing social, cultural and religious traditions in a multicultural setting could no longer be ignored by the Germans. "

Review of The Museum of Innocence ( Masumiyet Müzesi )
Orhan Pamuk’s Masumiyet Muzesi
I was on business trip to Istanbul Turkey again between July and August.
29th of August 2008 Orhan Pamuk’s latest novel (Masumiyet Muzesi) was published in Turkey, so I wanted to buy before I flew back to USA. I was working in many locations; it was hard to find a bookstore that sells even Nobel Prize winner book. I could not find it in many local bookstores. Actually to my surprise, they had not even heard the book’s name. I stayed at my brother’s flat before leaving the country. He bought the book for me. There it was, I was eager to read it on the road. I put The Museum of Innocence into my carry-on and caught Istanbul- Amsterdam - Portland flight at 5 am in the morning."

At the risk of tossing raw red meat to B & C and Davidb1 I would like to try to have a serious civil conversation about this depressing circumstance. IMO the best solution is to encourage moderate Muslims to challenge these sorts of irrational practices. IMO you attract more people with honey than vinegar YMMV of course:"

ZAKHO, IRAQ — The streets of this bustling frontier town are crowded with trucks sporting blue and white Turkish licence plates, and billboards advertising Turkish products that are popular in Iraq. Watching the hectic flow of commerce, you'd never think that hostilities are exchanged across this border almost as rapidly as goods are traded back and forth across the same line."

Turkish Weekly Comment - The Iran Letters – Part IV: A Comparison of Turkey and Iran[*]
Barın Kayaoglu
Sunday , 26 October 2008
For a Turk, one of the most pleasant features of Iran is how highly Iranians think of Turkey and Turkish people. It’s not that Turks dislike Iranians. But because of the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the government in Tehran, many – if not most – Turks have deep suspicions about their neighbors to the east. Especially with those Turks who have profound secular sensitivities, Iran – inaccurately thought of as “backward and fanatical” – is the symbol of what Turkey could become unless secularism is maintained no matter what."

North defies headscarf ban
By Simon Bahceli
EARLY in 2002, while working as an English teacher at the Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta, I was annoyed (but not surprised) to receive verbal instructions from the rector of the university telling my colleagues and I that we were to “inform” the school authorities if any female student was “caught” wearing a religious headscarf in class.
The instructions were read out by one of the rector’s minions at a staff meeting, during which we were also warned that some of the more devious students might try to get around the headscarf ban by wearing wigs. The only way to be sure was to give the wig a little tug, we were told."
