Harmony Beat: Tale of a Turkish-American friendship
Enjoy Robin Ryczek's essay about a friend she made through Cultures in Harmony:
In March 2007, I received confirmation that I was going to participate in my first two Cultures in Harmony projects. It was my first summer to travel abroad since a jaunt to Paris my junior year of college in 2002. But this time I was not going to Germany to visit Bach’s church, nor to Vienna to celebrate Mozart’s music as many of my colleagues had done before me. I was packing for two countries – one of which I had to look up on a map to learn which continent it belonged to. I was packing for Turkey and Tunisia."

Turkey’s troubles in the Caucasus
Aug 30th, 2008 by MESH
From Michael Reynolds
The outbreak of the Russian-Georgian War earlier this month apparently caught Ankara as poorly prepared as it caught Washington. The Turkish Foreign Ministry’s section dealing with the Caucasus reportedly was virtually unstaffed. The head of the section was in Mosul on temporary assignment, the section’s number-two spot is empty and has been for the last six months. The number three was also away on temporary assignment in Nakhichevan and the other assigned section members were on vacation, thus forcing on-duty diplomats from other desks to scramble."

Escape to Istanbul's secret island
Linsey McNeill loved the museums and bazaars of the Turkish capital, but it was the beaches of the Princes' Islands that finally won over her kids
My seven-year-old son slumped onto the heavily patterned carpet of Istanbul's Blue Mosque and looked up at me with a crumpled face. 'Mum, it's just a big empty room,' he moaned. I turned to his sister Emelye, nine, who, a little earlier, had seemed intrigued by the sound of the mullah calling Muslims to prayer. 'Look at all the beautiful tiles on the walls,' I whispered. ......One glaring omission from the Eurostat report is Turkey, an official candidate for EU membership. Hostility to Turkey’s bid in countries such as Austria and France stems partly from the objection that Turkey is already so big (more than 70m people) that its admission would fundamentally change the EU’s nature. But I see that, according to a recent United Nations Population Fund forecast, Turkey will keep on growing and have over 100m people by 2050.
Given what Eurostat is saying about population trends in existing EU member-states, it would seem that opposition to Turkey’s admission will just get stronger and stronger."

Evolution of Representing Migration in Turkish Film
Migration often brings with it the experience of disturbance and pain, and narrative films have usually focused on the exilic aspects of passage and resettlement. Changing places has traditionally been looked upon as something undesirable and traumatic. Take, for example, the films about the westward migrations of Turks. The anxiety linked to village-city migrations is explored in Turkish social realist masterpieces such as Halit Refig’s Gurbet Kuslari/ Birds of Exile (1964), in Zeki Ökten’s Sürü/Herd (1978, a film scripted by Yilmaz Güney), and in Ali Özgentürk’s At/Horse (1982)."

Gulf Times – Nato has no business looking for members in the Caucasus - by Jonathan Steele
Nato has no business looking for members in the Caucasus - by Jonathan Steele
After a fortnight of conflict on the ground and a flurry of propaganda and debate in European capitals the South Ossetian crisis is winding down. One of the abiding images — a Russian masterstroke — will be the moving concert given by world-renowned Valery Gergiev, a South Ossetian, and the Mariinsky orchestra in the ruins of Tskhinvali, the town the Georgians destroyed. Another unforgettable memory will be Georgia’s flak-jacketed president cowering on the ground as a Russian plane flies over the town of Gori. Bravado turning into humiliation is a metaphor for the whole foolish adventure.
Georgian men are hospitable and engaging, but fond of bombast and empty macho gestures. Unlike the Chechens, who have fought Russians for centuries, Georgians prefer poetry and vineyards to the challenge of war. President Mikheil Saakashvili epitomises the style, made worse in his case by the lies he served up to deceive foreign opinion. He boasted of defeat. Georgia was being swallowed up, Tbilisi was on the verge of occupation, Russia was using weapons of mass destruction.
The biggest lie was his attempt to airbrush the fact that he created the crisis by launching an artillery barrage on the South Ossetian capital, which killed scores of civilians and 15 Russian peacekeepers. It was absurd to think Russia would not retaliate.

Opponents of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) (or the U.S.) would be suppressed in an operation referred to as Ergenekon.
We would all have laughed at this person.
But this is exactly what has happened."
