Will a third bridge over the Bosporus help solve Istanbul's traffic plight? - Turkish Daily News Dec 30, 2007

"Will a third bridge over the Bosporus help solve Istanbul's traffic plight?
Sunday, December 30, 2007

Recent debates about a third bridge to be built over the Bosporus have revolved around issues such as when and where the bridge will be built and its possible outcomes rather than questioning the urgent need for a third bridge. Current discussions mostly focus on conflicts over profit, disturbing green areas, a weak transportation system and deficiencies in urban planning. But they come to a deadlock when the issue of the third bridge is mentioned. Some argue that a third bridge is already late in coming while others say it is the focus of politicians seeking payoffs."

ADVENA AVIS

Every December, particularly since 2004, EU Summits have been making important statements concerning the relations between the EU and Turkey. At the 2004 Summit, the EU decided to start accession negotiations with Turkey. Since then, these negotiations have been proceeding at a slow but steady pace. However, Turkey still has not implemented the Adaptation Protocol vis-à-vis Cyprus which had been placed as a condition for starting the accession negotiations. This December the EU Summit in its paragraph concerning Turkey did not mention the magic words accession negotiations but instead used the words intergovernmental negotiations. Immediately after that the Turkish humans went bananas and started accusing the EU of canceling the accession negotiations and other kind of similar nonsense. Now we birds would like to inform the Turkish humans that their panic and anger were in vain. The decision to start accession negotiations with Turkey was taken by all the member-states of the EU. Consequently to stop these negotiations, a new decision will be required and this is something that has not happened or is anticipated to happen. So why all this unnecessary noise? The only human in Turkey who kept his cool was the Erdoğan man. "

When the Turkish flag becomes a cross! - Turkish Daily News Dec 29, 2007

"When the Turkish flag becomes a cross!
Saturday, December 29, 2007

Orhan Kemal CENGIZ

Flags are everywhere. On balconies, in shop windows, on taxis, some of them in huge sizes hanging from huge flagpoles and seen from everywhere. What is this symbolism all about? It is not a celebration, it is not a gesture of joy; there are some elements in it involving protest against terror, we can understand that. However, terror and the armed uprising have been routine parts of our lives for quite some time. This flag love is a very new phenomenon though. It was not like that before. The Turkish flag has become a symbol like the cross; every Turkish person should have and put it on a visible place in which they reside or where they work. It is the Turkish cross that will be put forward against evil forces! But who are they? Against whom did we take out our crosses? Is this country under invasion? Is this a protest against the invaders? Who are they? It is like in protest against an occupation people are showing their patriotism and their determination to resist! "

"Turkey's Bombing of Iraq

By ANTHONY DiMAGGIO

The U.S. delivered an early Christmas present to the people of Iraq this year in the form of logistical support for Turkey's war against the Kurds. The Turkish government has succeeded Saddam Hussein as the primary oppressor of the Kurdish people, and it undertook its most recent round of U.S. supported attacks this last week with a renewed round of bombing of Kurdish areas in Northern Iraq. U.S. support for the Turkish campaign has been justified under the rubric of fighting terrorism, as Turkish officials claimed the December 23rd bombing targeted only Kurdish secessionist rebels, and resulted in no civilian deaths."

The Recent Turkish Elections: Why Is the EU Applauding?

"The Recent Turkish Elections: Why Is the EU Applauding?
While the EU has generally applauded the recent elections in Turkey as a victory for democracy, many within Turkey are convinced otherwise. The elections were won by the AKP, a religious party, which took 62 percent of the parliamentary seats (341 of 550 seats) with 46.7 percent of the vote. All electoral systems are overly generous to the party with the largest (plurality) vote. The high threshold of ten percent in the Turkish system is particularly so. Apart from questions of the degree to which the results reflect the popular will; however, the elections have raised fears that Turkey may be jettisoning its secular constitutional system."

In 1995, the Turkish army invaded northern Iraq, sending some 35,000 soldiers across the border to destroy the guerilla infrastructure of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) a militant group made up of Turkish Kurds that had found refuge in the lawless mountain region. Operation Steel, as it was called, killed over 500 militants, but still the PKK survived to fight another day. Istanbul: New Year's Eve In Istanbul

"New Year's Eve In Istanbul

The plastic Santas and fake pine trees that appear in shops immediately after Halloween make Istanbul, a city with a negligible number of Christians, look a bit like a Muslim-owned Wal-Mart during the holiday season. To Turks, 'Noel Bayram,' as Christmas is called in Turkish, is indistinguishable from New Year's Eve. This year Kurban Bayram, the Feast of the Sacrifice and one of the most important events on the Muslim calendar, fell on the third week of December. So, this month, the merriment that typically accompanies the ritual sacrifice of millions of sheep and goats collides with the trashy frippery of the west's Christmas and the drunken revelry of New Year celebrations on December 31. Places to join the madness after the jump."

Hoping 'Nail Baba' brings you a 'Merry Kiss-Mas' - Turkish Daily News Dec 25, 2007

"Hoping 'Nail Baba' brings you a 'Merry Kiss-Mas'
Tuesday, December 25, 2007

David JUDSON

I've never been quite comfortable with those terms of the Anglo-Saxon world, the holidays or seasons greetings, that seek to give us an all-encompassing generic salute to the varied rites of December. But I realize I'll get little relief here in Turkey where the month that brings Hanukah, Christmas, Feast of the Sacrifice this year, and of course the New Year's finale has become even more complex. For starters, there are the differences in the rites of Turkey's traditional Christian communities; for the Greek Orthodox Rum the important day is the same as generally observed in Europe and the United States, today. Most Armenian gatherings, however, are at the end of the 12 days of Christmas, that is to say on Jan. 5 and 6, I am told. And then in recent years has come the merger of New Year's into a sort of non-denominational Noel, with the man in the red suit repackaged as Noel Baba, and wreath-bedecked storefronts wishing shoppers İyi Noeller in a would-be secular salute to the turning of the annual calendar. ANKARA, Turkey -- The divisions that triggered a political crisis in Turkey earlier this year could soon derail plans to boost economic growth and remake the landscape for foreign and domestic investors.

Over the past five years, Turkey's government has pushed through changes that have increased growth to 7% a year and brought inflation down to the single digits. The changes involved cuts in government spending, an overhaul of the banking sector, strengthening the independence of the central bank and selling state-owned companies -- all part of an economic-recovery program introduced after a financial crisis in 2001."

Istanbul has always seemed like the ultimate exotic city to me. It's just the opposite of Chico, which has an utterly familiar feel to it.

San Francisco is about halfway between the two in terms of ambiance. It's familiar because I've known it all my life. But San Francisco's high population density, ethnic diversity, extremes of wealth and poverty in close proximity, grandiose architecture, hilly geography and tolerant atmosphere make it exotic."

"The U.S.-Turkish-Iraq Triangle

December 24, 2007

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's mild rebuke of Turkey this past week for launching military operations inside neighboring Iraq came across as less than genuine.

Contrary to Turkey's claim, the United States didn't give prior approval of the attack, she said. She suggested that the United States wasn't even aware of the military incursion until it began. Maybe there was no approval, but surely U.S. intelligence agencies knew what Turkey's government was up to. With all the U.S. money pouring into Iraq, we better know of a pending border incursion that could easily lead to a full regional war."

M. Orhan Tarhan
December 23, 2007

In the previous letter we discussed “The Importance of Laicism For Turkey” We will be surprised to find out that this importance does not seem to be understood by the friends of Turkey.

Of course, in today’s transparent world, the whole world sees Turkey’s problems. It would make sense that the states that call themselves “Friends of Turkey” would help Turks improve their laic majority and organize them for winning at the next election. It is surprising that both the United States of America (USA) and the European Union (EU), two friends of Turkey, have been supporting the religious party. Is it possible that these two friends want Turkey to become less survivable? In other words, are they really no friends of Turkey? That seems preposterous to me, but, that is exactly what many Turks have concluded and that is why pro-American vote in Turkey has sank to 9 %."

Millions of Muslims from across the world circled the Kaba in Mecca last week in the footsteps of an ancient ritual. As the swarming white army of pilgrims closed around the clean-cut black stone, they declared aloud: “ Labaik , Allah-huma-Labaik (Here, God, I am here)!”

Hundreds of miles away, near the Sufi poet Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi’s tomb in Konya (Turkey), singer Ahmed Ozhan took the 2000-strong crowd on a virtual pilgrimage. Swinging to Ozhan’s high-pitched devotional dirge, and accompanied by the plaintive sound of reed flutes, the audience repeatedly chanted “Labaik” a dozen times.

Even though the historical proofs are not enough and there is no international consensus or a court decision yet, in some countries, it is illegal to announce that the claims about the so-called Armenian genocide is a lie.

Switzerland is one of these countries with such a law, which clearly contradicts with the freedom of speech. Dogu Perincek, the leader of Workers' Party of Turkey -a figure that I personally dislike, was -unfortunately- convicted and sentenced in Switzerland because he denied 'the genocide.' Moreover, Swiss authorities obstructed his right to defend himself by not issuing him a visa prior to his trial."

"Editorial: Lessons in Turkey’s action in northern Iraq

As the war in Iraq led to the death of more innocent citizens on Tuesday, Turkish troops entered the Kurd homeland in northern Iraq in pursuit of Kurd rebels from Turkey. Since October this year, Ankara had been sounding dire warnings about Kurd rebels finding safe havens in Iraq with their fellow Kurds. Last week their ground artillery fire into the Kurdish northern Iraq escalated into air fire; and now the troops are on ground. The Iraqi government had appealed to Ankara to show patience but in Turkey a nationalist groundswell has compelled the Prime Minister, Mr Recep Erdogan, to give the go-ahead to the Turkish Army."
