"Does Israel rule the world?
With many of the major powers bowing to Tel Aviv, those aboard the Freedom Flotilla should be praised for risking their lives
Yesterday, the Israeli military attacked and boarded one of the Turkish aid ships sailing to Gaza as part of a flotilla, killing 19 and injuring many more. As this occurred in international waters, it is not only an act of piracy but could also be construed as an ‘act of war'. This attack on unarmed civilian men and women illustrates the moral depths to which the Jewish state has sunk. An Al Jazeera reporter on board the vessel says the Israelis fired live bullets even after a white flag was hoisted. This atrocity and the potential fall-out should merit loud condemnation from the international community ... but don't hold your breath! We have yet to witness the extent of Turkey's response."

"Israeli forces kill humanitarian workers in international waters
By BARRETT BROWN
The IDF has confirmed reports by Turkish media and other sources that its troops have stormed at least one of the ships participating in the aid flotilla which was to land in Gaza today in order to deliver supplies to residents of that territory; estimates of the number of dead currently range from 2 to two dozen as reported by various news outlets and the Israeli army itself. This incident comes less than a day after revelations that Israel has deployed subs equipped with tactical nukes to the Persian Gulf, putting their weapons in range of any target in Iran. In this new light, the deployment could reasonably be assumed to have been a precaution ahead of a likely incident with the long-publicized flotilla, one intended to prompt caution on the part of the Iranian government."

"Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque landmarks of Istanbul
Their impressive minarets and domes dominate the skyline of Istanbul and no tour to the ancient Turkish city is complete without a visit to its two most important landmarks -- the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
The Hagia Sophia, built in the 6th century, functioned as a church for more than 900 years, till the Ottoman Turks converted it into a mosque in the 15th century and it remained so for almost 500 years. It was in 1935 that the farsighted first Turkish president and founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatordered the Hagia Sophia to be converted into a museum.
After the building was transformed into a museum, prayers were no longer allowed inside. The layers of plaster covering the mosaic pictures of Christ and Virgin Mary on the ceilings of the gallery, applied during the Ottoman rule, were removed in many places to show the pictures and the massive building was thrown open to the public."

In “Change We Can Believe in,” a book that outlined his policy proposals and presidential agenda in the event of his election, then-candidate Barack Obama, after acknowledging that the U.S. policy toward Iran had not worked, clearly underscored preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power would be his key foreign policy goal. He stated that “no tool of statecraft or element of American power [w]ould be taken off the table” in pursuit of this goal and the planned strategy would start “with aggressive, principled, and direct diplomacy - backed with strong sanctions.”"

He stated that “no tool of statecraft or element of American power [w]ould be taken off the table” in pursuit of this goal and the planned strategy would start “with aggressive, principled, and direct diplomacy - backed with strong sanctions.”"

If you turn on a Turkish television today and turn to channel 6, you’ll encounter something that would have been unimaginable even a couple years ago: the letters W, Q and X, emerging from the mouths of soap-opera actors on a legal, public national channel.
Those letters, absent from the Turkish alphabet but part of the minority Kurdish language, are still officially illegal to utter or print in Turkey, despite the fact a sixth of the population, or 12 million people, are Kurds. The Turks, according to the constitution that founded their country, are one people, one ethnic group, with one language, regardless of the facts."

'So how does it feel to see your culture taken away from you?' That's what a friend in Paris emailed to me after Rima Fakih won the Miss USA Pageant last week. It was a loaded question. Supposedly, I should have felt the sting of an Arab-American Shi'ite being crowned because she hails from Michigan, which is my home state as well. While it's questionable if beauty pageants are inherently a constituent component of American culture, I'm sure our culture is not being taken away from us. If anything, it's being given away."

"Turkey's 'Ghandi' Could Shake Up Nation's Politics
VOA Dorian Jones | Istanbul 25 May 2010
The new leader of Turkey's main opposition party is being heralded by much of the media as the Gandhi of Turkey because of his quiet demeanor and tendency to reject ostentation. His election is being heralded as a potential earthquake in Turkish politics.
Kemal Kilicdaroglu, 61, was elected leader of the center left People's Republican Party (CHP) with a landslide majority, one that provoked a carnival-like atmosphere at the party conference. In his first speech Kilacdaroglu promised to bring his party back to its center-left roots."

Imagine an NFL where the only teams to have won the Super Bowl in its 44-year history were the New York Giants (16), New York Jets (16), Buffalo Bills (10), and the Green Bay Packers (4). Would you still watch? How about if the Packers hadn't won in 20 years?
Imagine 28 franchises never having tasted victory at the end of the season. Imagine more than half of those never even really getting close. What would your reaction be if you lived in Chicago, Miami, Denver, Atlanta, or anywhere else? Would you continue cheering for your hometown team or would you give up on it all and just start cheering for somebody who was going to win in New York?
The situation I have described is nearly identical to what has faced soccer fans in Turkey."

"What Did China Get for Backing Iran Sanctions?
A week after announcing a uranium-swap agreement with Turkey and Brazil, Iran on Monday formally submitted the proposal to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna — and in doing so, as Tehran sees it, put the proverbial ball back in the court of the U.S. and its allies. But Washington preempted Iran's latest gambit the same day, by announcing a new package of U.N. sanctions to be presented to the Security Council with the all-important backing of China. Beijing had previously been the key obstacle to adopting new sanctions, insisting that such measures would be counterproductive and demanding that all sides go the extra mile to find a solution through dialogue. Judging by their reactions until now, the Chinese might have been expected to respond to the Turkey-Brazil-Iran proposal by demanding that any discussion of sanctions be postponed until the potential of the confidence-building mechanism had been tested. Instead, it backed the U.S., saying the onus was on Iran to do more to satisfy international concerns over the intent of its nuclear program. So what changed?"

Though Turkey could have opened four chapters under the Spanish term presidency, now it might be left empty handed because of non-compliance with the bloc's criteria. In spite of great hopes at the outset of the Spanish term presidency for progress in the Turkish-EU accession talks, it appears increasingly unlikely that Turkey will succeed in opening any negotiation chapters before July."

U.S. political scientists argue that all politics are ultimately local. Everything, including formal declarations by senior officials, only serve as self-advertising to a certain extent. The end of the 20th century has generated an unprecedented demand for professional advertising services and image-makers. However, self-advertising has real potential. You can, of course, suggest a presidential candidate, such as U.S. President Barack Obama, not to ask for his favorite mustard in a cafeteria and to use the one that is available, so as not to seem a snob in the eyes of potential voters. But what if PR experts face problems that are more serious than choosing a mustard?"

U.S. political scientists argue that all politics are ultimately local.

In this case, recent events have the potential to create an international crisis in the coming days. Before getting to the possible explosive situation, we first need some background information."
