In “Change We Can Believe in,” a book that outlined his policy proposals and presidential agenda in the event of his election, then-candidate Barack Obama, after acknowledging that the U.S. policy toward Iran had not worked, clearly underscored preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power would be his key foreign policy goal. He stated that “no tool of statecraft or element of American power [w]ould be taken off the table” in pursuit of this goal and the planned strategy would start “with aggressive, principled, and direct diplomacy - backed with strong sanctions.”"
