The deal, signed at the height of the "migrant crisis," has met criticism on various fronts, and will likely be discussed at the upcoming European Council meeting of June 23-26. In the run-up to this meeting, Germany's foreign minister Heiko Maas told the German broadsheet Die Welt, that he thinks the deal should be renewed.

Turkish policeman convicted in 2014 death of teenager
June 18, 2021
Associated Press
A Turkish police officer has been sentenced to nearly 17 years in prison for the murder of a teenager who was hit in the head with a tear-gas canister in 2013. Police officer Fatih Dalgali was on trial for causing the death of Berkin Elvan, a 14-year-old injured in Istanbul as the “Gezi Park” anti-government protests were taking place nearby. Elvan was in a coma for 269 days. His death in March 2014 at age 15 led to a flare-up in protests. Elvan’s family said he was out buying bread, not protesting. But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was then prime minister, claimed Elvan was among “terrorists” with his face concealed and argued police had no way of knowing his age.

(CNN)President Joe Biden and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a bilateral meeting on Monday following a meeting of NATO leaders in Brussels.
The meeting, which took place at the NATO headquarters in Belgium, was expected to be contentious. Biden in April became the first US president in decades to recognize the massacre of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire as a genocide -- a move that risked a potential fracture with Turkey but signaled a commitment to global human rights.

The world's most colorful political psychodrama is unfolding in Turkey, convulsing the country and its power heirarchy. A top Turkish underworld figure, Sedat Peker, has parted ways from the ruling Erdogan party and is posting long videos on Youtube alleging all manner of crimes by leading figures in government and their allies. Crimes from bribery to murder to rape to drug smuggling and much else like threatening opposition media, commandeering zillions from national banks and corrupting the judiciary so routinely that no rule of law can be said to exist. Deploying mafia to do its dirty work - this is what Turks call 'the deep state' – they invented the phrase – was a phenomenon that flourished in the 1990s and before, which Erdogan first came to power promising to eradicate.
