ANKARA: With one year to go before President Ahmet Necdet Sezer's seven-year mandate expires, a debate is already raging in Turkey on who will replace the popular secularist known for his regular clashes with the Islamist-rooted government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
On paper, the last word on the choice of modern Turkey's 11th head of state is in the hands of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has an absolute majority in Parliament."
