"Turkish Military to Hand Over ISAF Command to Italy
Turkey is to formally transfer the command of the International Security and Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan to Italy on Thursday.
KABUL - It is the second time that Turkey has commanded ISAF.
Turkey has been commanding the multi-national peacekeeping and stability force since February 13, the second time that it has led ISAF.
Since being established in late 2001, ISAF has been tasked with ensuring a safe and secure environment in Afghanistan. Currently, the force consists of 8,500 service personnel from 47 nations.
During Turkey’s most recent term of commanding ISAF, the role of the force has extended beyond the Afghan capital Kabul into more outlying regions and a number o
f functions have been handed over to Afghan authorities. "
