'I hope the EU door will remain open,' said Nicolas Burns, US Under Secretary for Political Affairs. 'Ukraine and Georgia [and the Balkan states] should have some kind of link to the EU and NATO. We in the west should be welcoming them. It doesn't mean immediate membership. We need to have a connection with them [and] make commitments. We and NATO certainly feel that way and our door is still open,' said Burns."
