For over 40 years, Turkey has been politely knocking on Europe's door asking to be let in. And since Turkey became an associate member of the European Union in 1963, there have been moments of optimism in which it seemed that the start of membership talks was right around the corner.
Once again, we have reached a crossroads in which Europeans will decide how to proceed. In the coming weeks, the EU Council will decide whether to add to the already lengthy list of conditions to Turkey's membership that were agreed upon on December 17 last year. Adding more obstacles to Turkey's path to membership would be a sad mistake, as it would be tantamount to Europe turning its back on an opportunity to lead the world out of its dangerous clash-of-civilizations logic. "
