Turkish Daily News:Cyprus bid warms up

"Cyprus bid warms up
Saturday, January 15, 2005

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is preparing for a critical meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the sidelines of the annual World Economic Forum meetings in Davos, Switzerland, which initiated last year's unsuccessful drive for reunification in Cyprus.
The prime minister will ask Annan to resume his good offices mission for a resumed bid to reunite the island, when he meets him in Davos on Jan. 26-30. However, convincing Annan is likely to be more difficult than it was a year ago. Already busy with relief efforts in the aftermath of the Asian tsunami disaster and facing allegations of mismanagement in the Oil for Food Program prior to the U.S.-led war in Iraq, Annan looks unwilling to embark on a new mission unless he sees strong chances of success. This is precisely what is lacking, given the Greek Cypriot reluctance for a solution."
