We have been stressing repeatedly since the run-up to the historic Dec. 17 meeting of the European Council that once Turkey got a date for the start of accession talks, the Cyprus issue would become some sort of an internal problem of the European Union even though securing a date or even starting talks would not mean Turkey has joined the European club.
We repeatedly underlined that the rules of the game would change and that both Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots would find themselves cornered by the tiny Greek Cypriot state -- a full-fledged member of the EU.
Again, we have been stressing all along that the �We will not leave the Turkish Cypriots out in the cold� and the �We will end Turkish Cypriot isolation� rhetoric won't mean much under international law as long as the �legal perception� of the situation on Cyprus is not changed. "
